But that doesn‘t mean it‘s uncontrolled. Different groups control different parts of it.

2. ICANN — The Internet‘s Address Book

ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) is a non-profit organisation that manages domain names and IP addresses.

Think of it like the phone book of the internet. It makes sure that when you type 'google.com', you go to Google‘s servers, not someone else‘s.

ICANN doesn‘t control content — it controls the address system.

3. Governments — The Rule Makers

Governments don‘t run the internet, but they regulate it. They decide what‘s legal, what‘s blocked, and what‘s tracked.

In some countries, the internet is heavily censored. In others, it‘s mostly free. But every government has some level of control.

4. Big Tech — The Gatekeepers

Google, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft — these companies don‘t own the internet, but they own the platforms we use every day.

They control what we see, what we can say, and how we connect. They are the gatekeepers of the modern internet.

5. Internet Service Providers — The Road Builders

ISPs like Comcast, AT&T, and others build the infrastructure. They lay cables, build towers, and connect you to the rest of the world.

They don‘t control what you do online, but they can control how fast you can do it — and what content they prioritise.

6. Content Delivery Networks — The Distributors

Cloudflare, Akamai, and others help deliver content quickly. They cache data on servers all over the world so that when you open a website, it loads fast.

They don‘t control what you see, but they decide how efficiently it reaches you.

7. Users — The Heart of the Internet

You don‘t control the internet — but you are part of it. Every post, every search, every comment adds to the collective experience.

The internet exists because we use it. Without users, it‘s just cables and servers.
