Week 2: My wife has an allergic reaction to our dog!?

By Felix the pup | The Story of Felix | 20 Apr 2021

I mentioned in my last post that Felix had been nipping our hands and that both my wife and my hands had become very itchy and irritated. Within a couple days however my wife's whole body was becoming itchy and red.

“OH NO SHE IS ALLERGIC TO OUR FURBABY” we thought. We immediately panicked. We were in love with this puppy (I mean how could you not, look at him), but the thought of being itchy and red forever really did not appeal to my wife.

We set up an allergy appointment for as soon as possible, (one was not available for a couple of weeks) and in the meantime decided to deep clean everything hoping it was something else.

We stopped letting him into our bedroom, started taking multiple showers a day, started wiping him down daily with allergenic wipes, and vacuuming the whole house daily. My wife stopped picking him up, and started wearing gloves and a mask when interacting with him (she hated this, but we were trying our best!)

The worst part at least for me was that we were trying to keep any of Felix’s potential allergens out of the bed. Which meant, we decided that Karen should not be getting up at night to take him to potty. As I mentioned in my previous post, the calculation of how long a dog can hold it, is his age in months plus one. Meaning I was getting up 3x a night to take this puppy to the bathroom.

I also started to do the math in my head… Felix was 9 weeks old at this point. If I slept on average for 8 hours a night, this meant I would be getting up 3x a night for the next 3 weeks, 2x a night for another month, and at least 1x a night for the next 4 months.

Unsurprisingly within a few days of this, I was struggling to function. Its amazing how these dogs have essentially tricked us with their cuteness and companionship to be willing to do almost anything for them…. But how could you say no to this face. (also doesn't it look like he is plotting his next move)

Anyways, long story short. After a few days of rabid cleaning, and being insanely careful my wife got her allergy test, AND….. was not allergic to dogs, or anything else.

We had started to suspect by that point since for the most part her reaction had gone away, but it was nice to get confirmation, and especially nice for me since we were able to start splitting up our puppy duties equally again, meaning I could get some real sleep!

My next post will be about Felix’s first Christmas! Like and follow if you want to see the update (Here is a sneak peak of his first time in the snow!)

This a blog about my experience with my first puppy. His name is Felix, and he is a miniature schnauzer. He is cute, stubborn and a trouble maker. Most of the time I have no idea what I am doing, so please be gentle with your comments.
