Controversy surrounds The Shenganiguns and their planned 2022 chain of concerts dubbed The Uteo* Tour, which are to take place entirely in the Metaverse.

Politician Kwame Kamau-Smith has strongly opposed these plans by the band, saying that the Metaverse was bad for the youth in Kenya.

In the past, Kamau-Smith has locked horns with The Shenganiguns. The band composed a song that openly criticized Kamau-Smith's corrupt ways. In retaliation, he banned the band, citing their music as being "Un-African" and "a bad influence on the youth".

The band manifesto of The Shenganiguns outlines their philosophy and mission:

The rock melodies of The Shenganiguns are the guns they use to fight and speak out against ills plaguing Kenyan society, number one being corruption.

This Kenyan band's shenanigans (silly or high-spirited behaviour) are the camouflage they use to hide their shrewd and analytical minds, minds that are determined to expose the shenanigans (secret or dishonest activity or manouvering) of the powers-that-be in Kenyan society.

The lyrics of The Shenganiguns are bold, unapologetic and sprinkled with an unhealthy dose of Kenya's unofficial national language: Sheng.

The band's new, no-nonsense manager, Api, and the band's controversial publicist declined to comment on Kamau-Smith's views.

Fans of The Shenganiguns are divided about their favourite band's decision to have The Uteo in the Metaverse. Some hail it as an excellent move that is more inclusive and that will circumvent any attempts by the powers-that-be to sabotage the concerts. Other fans have expressed misgivings about the Metaverse, saying that reality will always be better than any manufactured fiction.
