The vitamin K deficiency is uncommon in healthy adults, but can still happen if you have fat malabsorption, liver diseases, prolonged antibiotic therapy or gastrointestinal disorders. You can check the severity of vitamin K deficiency by measuring clotting time. Anti-clotting drugs like warfarin are vitamin K inhibitors, and should be used carefully if someone is deficient in vitamin K.
Newborns and breastfed infants are at risk of vitamin K deficiency or low levels of vitamin K (as the placental transfer of vitamin K is poor and human milk has very low levels of vitamin K, combined with the liver immaturity). Bleeding disease within the skull is still one of the significant causes of infants dead worldwide, so in order to prevent this, in many countries, vitamin K is administered to all newborns (phytomenadione 10mg/ ml injection). And with this, i finished exposing the fat soluble vitamins.
Before we go to explore the water soluble vitamins, i will recap few important ideas related to vitamins. I am talking about the bioavailability concept, as there were few questions related to this. So, the bioavailability is the relative proportion of a vitamin or mineral that it is absorbed into the body. In certain foods, the vitamin or mineral is bound to other compounds, preventing it from being absorbed. Even if they are rich in vitamins or minerals, there is a low bioavailability. Surprising, vitamin in synthetic form are absorbed well, having high bioavailability (folic acid, vitamin A beta-carotene).
