What’s goin on, Investors?
As a passive income practitioner, I not only look for passive income opportunities I also find ways to save and keep what I have gained…this post is about not losing money in places you may not be aware of, such as the Gas Station.
Rising costs are affecting every corner of the American economy, and now drivers are facing an unexpected hit at the pump. Beyond fluctuating gas prices, many stations have quietly introduced credit card surcharges that can add up to serious money over time. The only way I see to change this is through LEGISLATION!

The $1 Per Gallon Surprise
Across the country, particularly in Florida, gas stations are implementing credit card fees of up to $1 per gallon. While this practice is entirely legal, the problem lies in how these charges are communicated to customers. Signs announcing the surcharge are often small, poorly placed, or only visible after you've already started fueling.
The math is sobering. With the average car holding 18-20 gallons, a single fill-up could cost you an extra $18-20 in fees alone. For regular drivers, this translates to potentially hundreds of dollars annually—money that could have gone toward actual fuel or micro-investments, like DCA (Dollar Cost Averaging) into crypto or some dividend stocks.
The Legal Loophole
Credit card surcharges are perfectly legal under federal law, but there's a catch: businesses must clearly display this information where customers can see it before making their purchase. Unfortunately, many stations push this requirement to its limits, using minimal signage that's easy to miss.
Consumer protection agencies consider poorly marked surcharges an unfair practice, but the legal burden falls on customers to notice and read the signs. Unless signage is completely hidden, stations can argue they've met their disclosure requirements.

The Real Financial Impact
Consider this: the average American driver spends over $2,400 annually on gasoline. If you're regularly hit with credit card fees, you could easily see that number climb significantly higher. Frequent drivers might find themselves paying for an entire extra tank of gas each month in fees alone.
Protecting Yourself at the Pump
Here are practical strategies to avoid these surprise charges:
Read before you pump. Take a moment to scan for fee disclosures before selecting your payment method. Look for signs near the pump, on the display screen, and at eye level around the fueling area.
Ask questions. If you're unsure about fees, ask station employees directly. Regular customers should inquire about loyalty programs or cash discounts that might offset these charges.
Carry cash as backup. Having cash on hand gives you options if you discover a surcharge too late in the process.
Choose transparent businesses. Support gas stations that clearly post their fee structures and maintain honest business practices. If a station makes its policies easy to understand and its staff is upfront about charges, reward that transparency with your business.
Consider cash payments. Many stations offering credit card surcharges provide discounts for cash payments, which can result in genuine savings.
If ya Didn't Know, Now ya Know!
While credit card surcharges at gas stations are legal, they don't have to be inevitable. By staying alert, asking questions, and choosing to do business with transparent retailers, you can avoid these hidden fees and keep more money in your pocket. In an era of rising costs, every dollar saved at the pump matters.
Until next time, this is The Dark Sage singing out PEACE!✌️
