When the Internet Goes Dark, How Decentralized Is Bitcoin?

When Iran shut down its domestic internet in early January, the effects rippled well beyond messaging apps and news sites. Bitcoin mining operations inside the country lost their ability to report hashes to pools and receive payouts, even as the rial was sliding to record lows against the dollar — precisely the moment when demand for an alternative store of value tends to spike.

Crypto trade press covered it as a mining-operations story. It's really a much bigger story about what "decentralized" money actually depends on physically, and why that dependency is becoming a live geopolitical target.

A War on the Seabed

Start with what's happening to the infrastructure itself.

Since October 2023, vessels linked to Russia's so-called shadow fleet have been implicated in severing or damaging at least eleven cables in the Baltic Sea, most recently in the Fitburg incident on New Year's Eve, when Finnish special forces boarded a cargo ship suspected of dragging its anchor across cables linking Finland and Estonia.

The European Commission responded in February 2026 with a €347 million subsea infrastructure package and a new "Cable Security Toolbox" — the bloc's largest-ever investment in protecting undersea cables.

The Baltic isn't isolated.

In the Red Sea, cables were cut in 2024 after a Houthi-damaged vessel drifted for two weeks before sinking, cutting internet access for more than 100 million people across West and North Africa.

In March 2026, as the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran escalated, Iranian drones struck three AWS data centers in the UAE and Bahrain, immediately disrupting regional payment firms. Gulf states have since complained at the International Telecommunications Union about direct strikes on a UAE cable landing station, warning that five of the fiber systems running through the Strait of Hormuz — carrying traffic between Europe, Asia and the Gulf — sit in what is now an active conflict zone.

Separately, West and East African nations have absorbed repeated cable cuts since 2024 severe enough to force the U.S. embassy in Dar es Salaam to suspend operations for two days.

None of this is really about crypto.

It's about states realizing that roughly 99% of intercontinental data — and, not incidentally, a good chunk of global finance — travels through a few hundred physical cables that are strikingly easy to sabotage and strikingly hard to attribute an attack to. The European Commission itself describes submarine cables as carrying 99% of intercontinental internet traffic.

The Dependency Nobody Markets

Here's the part most coverage of either story misses.

Crypto's pitch to the world is that it doesn't need permission from anyone — no bank, no border, no central authority.

What it does still need, unglamorously, is a working internet connection.

For centralized exchanges specifically, it also needs a working connection to a small number of data centers and cloud regions that sit near exactly the choke points now being targeted.

When Iran went dark, it wasn't just miners who lost service. Anyone trying to move funds onto an exchange, check a stablecoin balance, or exit a position lost the same access, at the same moment their currency was collapsing and their appetite for an alternative was highest.

Iran's January 8 shutdown effectively cut the country off from the global internet, with Cloudflare observing traffic dropping to effectively zero.

That's the cruel irony worth sitting with:

The populations most likely to reach for Bitcoin or a dollar-pegged stablecoin during a currency crisis or conflict — Iranians, Africans experiencing repeated cable outages, Gulf residents watching drone strikes hit data centers — are disproportionately the same populations sitting downstream of the world's most fragile and most contested cable routes.

The tool marketed as an escape hatch from state control shares a foundation with the very infrastructure states are now learning to break.

The Workaround Already Exists — and It's Telling

There is a partial answer, and it predates this wave of sabotage by nearly a decade.

Blockstream's satellite network broadcasts the Bitcoin blockchain for free from geosynchronous satellites, letting a node keep syncing even if its terrestrial connection goes dark — a service explicitly built for censorship and outage resilience.

Paired with mesh-networking tools like goTenna, it's technically possible to compose a transaction offline, relay it over a local mesh, and hand it to a satellite uplink without ever touching the ordinary internet.

It's slow, low-bandwidth, and one-directional in its simplest form — you can receive the chain from space more easily than you can broadcast a transaction into it — but it works.

What's changed isn't the technology.

It's the reason to care about it.

A resilience feature that used to be discussed mainly in the context of authoritarian shutdowns — Myanmar, Iran's own prior blackouts — is now relevant to a much broader set of buyers: anyone whose region sits near a cable route that a state actor might find useful to cut during the next crisis.

That's a growing map, not a shrinking one.

Global cable damage already runs near 200 incidents a year, mostly accidental, and deliberate sabotage is no longer a fringe scenario governments dismiss.

What to Actually Watch

The realistic near-term effect isn't mass adoption of satellite Bitcoin nodes — the bandwidth and cost make that impractical for most users.

It's more likely to show up as infrastructure hedging further up the stack:

  • Exchanges diversifying cloud regions and network paths away from single choke points.
  • Stablecoin issuers reducing dependence on individual infrastructure regions.
  • Node operators maintaining out-of-band backup connectivity.
  • Mining pools preparing alternative communication paths.
  • Greater investment in satellite and mesh-network infrastructure.

None of it makes crypto immune to a cable cut.

It just narrows the gap between what "censorship-resistant" has always promised and what the physical network can actually deliver when someone decides to sever it.
