This week SpaceX has already had two really big wins for not only the company now but for it moving forward. What are those two wins you might wonder?
SpaceX's Falcon Heavy was chosen to be the rocket to carry NASA's Lunar Station, Gateway, to the moon! This launch is not expected to occur until 2024 the tentative date for the Station to begin its journey to orbit the moon. With the weight of trying to send a whole space station into space just like the International Space Station before it Gateway will be sent in model sections. SpaceX has been awarded the first two contracts to launch those first two modules which will carry the propulsion and power element (PPE) and the habitat and logistics outpoast (HALO) respectively. It will be interesting to see if the first of the modules take off in May 2024 as is the current plan. The Artemis Program is highly ambitious in its timeline to get people to the moon by 2024. One has to be hopeful that the science is allowed to continue uninterrupted for this program with the changing administrations.
The second huge news story for SpaceX this week came from the SpaceX announcement that Beta service had begun in the UK! With over 1,000 satellites now coverage has been the northern part of North America comprised of the Northern United States and Canada. With a possible gear up for a Starlink IPO this is huge! In the UK the $99.99 price is much in line for what people pay for 100mbs download speed so if it continues to improve speed wise while they continue to build out the satellites that makes it perfect for the average UK citizen! Being able to spinoff even part of Starlink would allow for SpaceX to rake in billion of dollars to use in other ways! This would allow them to not have to further fundraise anymore money even with the great rates they have been getting already!
