The Washington Diaries: Inauguration Day

By Cje95 | Texas Boy in a DC World | 20 Jan 2021

Well, today is the day of change and the city is a very very odd place. When I went out this morning to get my coffee I left early to go get coffee before things even had a chance to heat up. As I walked the couple of blocks to Starbucks I was amazed at what I was seeing. It was a completely different place than even yesterday.

Yesterday evening the Sergent of Arms for the House sent out an email to all members and staff informing them about how locked down the city was going to be. Starting this morning no one was allowed to drive even outside the green zone unless they had a congressional ID. The only people on the streets as I walked were a couple of Taxi cars, police cars, two metro buses, and what I can easily assume was either National Guard Troops or police in white vans. These vans were easy to identify as security because they traveled in groups of three and were completely unmarked. During my walk to Starbucks and back, I saw three different groups of these vans traveling. There were also several garbage trucks driving on the roads headed in the same direction so I wonder if they were being sent to go block off streets or bridges.

I was unique in that I was the only person out on the streets not walking a dog. Since I went to Starbucks at 8 am this was really odd as people are always out even just walking around but not today. Starbucks itself was empty and only a few orders were awaiting pickup.

Fast-forwarding to right now as I write this you can hear helicopters flying around they appear to be a mix of news and security. Police vehicles are also parked on every block some with their lights on some just parked. The streets are very empty instead of the jam-packed parking I am used to seeing around my area. This whole scene reminds me of the aftermath of the flooding in Houston a few years ago. It is just quiet no construction noise no vehicle noise no emergency services noise. It is just quiet.

Oh, and it just started to lightly snow which to a Texas boy like myself is super strange!
