I think it is safe to say that what happened Saturday afternoon to President Trump will have incredible and reverberating effects moving forward. There will be effects not only on candidate safety but the safety of everyone involved including the likes of poll workers who often seem to be forgotten about. Over the weekend I had several of my interns reach out to me wondering what the situation was and if anything was going to change for work today because the House Office Buildings are open to the public and while there are metal detectors it is still a scary situation.
Thankfully, Congress is in recess this week as the Republican National Convention or RNC kicks off today which will formally nominate Trump for President and officially lock in the Republican Party's Platform. As a result, almost every Member of Congress, regardless of party, is out of DC. While DC has significant security protocols an incident like this will result in enhancements. Already today there has been a much heavier police presence in the Capitol Complex with multiple K-9s patrolling around.
I honestly cannot wrap my head around how next week will play out. Not only do the Members return but more importantly Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will be addressing a Joint Session of Congress. Last week we were told about how tight security was going to be and how they are going to close and even limit some areas to staff. This is extremely unique because even with other Heads of State and the President staff typically is exempt from the closers but not this time.
It would not be shocking for me if they ended up deploying the unscalable wall around the Capitol due to the extremely high likelihood that there would be protests over the War in Gaza. Given what has just happened with President Trump the Biden Administration is going to go way above and beyond to ensure a smooth and easy time for the Israeli PM because the Admin cannot afford to have another blemish on its record.
