Slinterlands Share your battle: Magi of Chaos in Silver

By Engilhramn | Starting beggar | 9 Oct 2022

This week's spotlight is on the **Magi of Chaos**.

A Neutral monster with 2 Magic attack, and that's pretty all for me at Bronze/Silver level. It will gain Oppress at level 5, which I have never found to be a very useful ability.
Does that mean it should be frown upon?

Certainly not!
Firstly, it's a Neutral card, so it can fit in any team and fill a blank spot if needed according to the ruleset.
But it's real advantage is its ratio damage/mana. It's the cheapest 2 Magical damage monster, behind the Djinn Apprentice for Fire, and ex aequo with the Goblin Psychic and Magi Necrosi. That will make him a perfect play for average mana matches, to fill all the spots with the optimum damage output.
Play him with Obsidian, and he becomes a serious menace.

Seeing the Mana limit and the Equalizer rule, I went for Earth right away. Magic Earth is very powerful is this Mana range, and Healing works particularly well under Equalizer. I also know I'm very likely to face a mirror match.

So I will try to out-damage the opponent by maximizing the magical damage dealt, while keeping on the infamous magical/healing style of Earth.
I will go with the pretty classical:
* Mycelic Slipspawn in second position, for the Taunt
* Spirit Hoarder just behind, for the Taunt heal
* Queen Mycelia for the armor, just in case, and she's quite cheap anyway
* Goblin Psychic for the Tank heal

I'm left with 14 Mana for the last and first monster.
* Magi of Chaos goes last, for it's relatively high attack for the cost
* I went with Suidae Shaman for the tank. I usually would go for Grund, but I wanted Magi of Chaos in. I thought that the Charging wouldn't matter, as the tank would die around round 3 anyway, Grund wouldn't do better. He will be covered by the Taunt so that he will place one powerful attack.

The teams arrives, and without surprise, it's a mirror!
The opponent chose a similar line up, but with Grund and Djinn Biljka. His Psychic Goblin is weirdly placed also.

First round, nothing special, just hitting on the Taunting Mycelic Slipspawn, both won't last much longer.

Round 2, his Splipspawn dies, my Shaman discharges a massive 9 damage to Grund who dies just after and my Slipspawn gets healed another time to spare my tank a bit more. The game is done by now, and that's thanks to the speed (yeah only 2, but still...) of the Magi of Chaos.

Round 3, now is just about damage output, and I have 1 point more with a little more speed.

Round 4, the Psychic Goblin reaches first position. The game could have lasted a bit longer, but this mistake definitely shorten it. The victory is ensured.

In this mirror match, I would have played something similar to my opponent if I didn't bet on the Magi of Chaos. 1 point of damage and 1 point of speed. It's all that took to make a difference.
