Battlemage Secrets: Fire and Regret

Battlemage Secrets: Fire and Regret

Greetings Battlemages!

This week's challenge is a ruleset that will forbid or at least force you to be careful with Ranged units: the well named Fire and Regret!

The Ruleset: Fire and Regret

Under the Fire and Regret ruleset, all units receive the Return Fire ability, meaning that any ranged damage dealt will be returned back to the attacker.

So obviously, you will want to refrain from using Ranged units.
In my opinion, this ruleset is not the most impactful on gameplay, but because Ranged units is certainly the type of unit I use the less. Nonetheless, this limitation can be impactful on the use of some key monsters.
I'm thinking particularly of Life, losing its Tank Heal represented by Venari Cristalsmith. And of course General Sloan is out of the equation!
Or if you're like me and are often left with 2 mana to fill in your last monster, you may want to calculate again, because Xenith Archer won't do much!

As a consequence I don't have any special trick for this ruleset, so I can share a general nasty little trick. It was pulled on me several times, and as you know: if you can't beat them, join them!

The Battle

The battle is played in Modern Silver. It is opened to Fire, Water, Earth and Death. Its mana cap is 31 and the rulesets are Fire and Regret, and Up to Eleven (all the monsters gain the Amplify ability, reinforcing even more the Fire and Regret).

The lineup

I like Water on this mid-range mana cap. Well, I like Water quite often actually!
That's a good range to play this dirty trick, so I went on with the plan and picked:

Summoner: Kelya Frendul, Speed and Armor boost, very versatile

First position: Venari Marksrat, with Martyr, you see the trick coming
Second position: Djinn Oshannus, already a monster, so let's boost him even more!
Third position: River Hellondale, with Ressurect... yes it's nasty... almost shameful...
Fourth position: Deeplurker, the good Opportunist!
Last position: Pelacor Bandit, the evasive sneaky unit to protect the back line

My opponent picked Thaddius Brood with Cursed Windeku and its Thorns, Carrion Shade (in second position, why?), Disintegrator for the Melee penalty, then the duo Venari Bonesmith and Life Sapper and their Life Leech, and finally Crypt Beetle for its Shield.
That's 3 non-attacking units on the lineup, a bit too much for my taste.

Round 1

Carrion Shade is killed by Deeplurker (maybe that was the plan) and the Marksrat has also been killed and resurrected. The plan is in motion!

Round 2

image.png

Ok, second death of the Marksrat, now Djinn Oshannus is properly boosted, let the match begins!

Round 3

image.png

As you can, it's a mighty Oshannus we have here... Yet the kill of Cursed Windeku is for Deeplurker, never missing a fine Opportunity!

Round 4

image.png

Disintegrator is finished by River Hellondale. The opponent is left with the Venari Bonesmith/Life Sapper duo, who can't leech anything due to Oshannus' Void! Game's over for now.

Round 5

Again Deeplurker to finish the Venari Bonesmith.

Round 6

For the finish. Except for the Venari Markrat, my team is almost untouched.

Takeaway

Yes, this trick is nasty, it's dirty and it shouldn't be used!
Yet if you know how to counter this kind of set-up, please share because it seems a bit broken to me! I can't wait for the rotation of Modern cards to be done with Llama/Kron, hopefully it's not to be replaced by some Marksrat shenanigans.

That being said, see you on the Battlefield!
(where I still may use this setup!)
