The reason why the islanders mummified their deceased remains a mystery. His method is "very good", according to specialists. And the xaxo, unlike the Egyptian mummies, keep the viscera (liver, kidneys, lungs, heart) inside and a great preservation of the musculature.

The mummy of the Barranco de Herques  is the best preserved in the world. It is surprising for its abundant and curly hair, of a type that has not been found in other embalmed people. There are even those who thought it was a piece of wood, especially because of its color.
