#387 🔸 Who you truly are shows in the choices you make when nobody is watching

Recovering pieces of yourself from past relationships, which I wrote about last time, brings us back to the fundamental question of who we are in the absence of external influences. And there is a place where this question receives a concrete and often surprising answer: the small, mundane choices we make daily when nobody is watching and when there are no social stakes.

Today's subject is about authenticity in details, about what it means to be yourself not in grand and declared moments, but in the ordinary texture of private life.

There is a difference I observe as significant, even though it seems minor: the way you behave with yourself in private compared to the way you behave in public. I am not speaking of hypocrisy in a moral sense. I am speaking of a more subtle form of dissociation, in which standards, choices, and the way you treat yourself change radically depending on the presence or absence of others.

Do you eat differently when alone compared to when with others? Do you allow yourself things you would deny in public? Or, conversely, are you harder on yourself in private than you would be if observed? All of these are forms of authenticity or its absence in apparently insignificant details.

Why do private choices matter for our identity and relationships? For a few reasons I consider important.

The first is that private choices form habits that, over time, shape who you become. It is not the major life decisions that form you most. What forms you is what you do with the hours when nobody sees you. How you manage laziness, sadness, boredom, or unshared joy. What you choose when the choice has no external consequences.

The second is that dissociation between private and public behaviour produces a subtle form of psychological tiredness. Maintaining two versions of yourself, one for the world and one for yourself, requires energy. And over time, this consumed energy produces a diffuse sense of inauthenticity that colours all relationships.

The third is that life partners come to know the private version. However well you manage your public image, in close relationships and especially in shared living, the private version becomes visible. And if there is a large distance between the two, the relationship lives a form of confusion that is not easy to articulate.

What does authenticity in mundane details concretely mean? A few examples that seem trivial but are not.

How you arrange your personal space, even when nobody sees it. Whether you live in disorder you tolerate or in a cleanliness you force exclusively when someone comes over, says something about how you relate to your own comfort and your own presence in life.

What you listen to, read, or watch when you have no need to justify yourself to anyone. Unshared tastes, niche passions, pleasures you might consider embarrassing if others knew, all of these are genuine pieces of you.

How you rest. Whether you allow yourself rest without guilt or always transform it into disguised productivity. Whether you can do nothing or whether inactivity produces anxiety.

How you speak to yourself in thought. How you manage moments of boredom, solitude, or unshared euphoria. Whether you are curious or critical towards your own experience.

Authenticity in details has a direct connection to the quality of relationships. People who have an honest relationship with their private version, who know what they genuinely like, what makes them feel good or bad, what they choose in the absence of any external pressure, bring a clearer presence to relationships. They do not seek from their partner validation for preferences they do not recognise even to themselves. They do not ask the other to guess who they are because they already know.

And in intimate life, private authenticity is the foundation of erotic authenticity. Who you are with yourself in private is who you will most be able to be in intimacy. You cannot be fully authentic with someone else if you are not with yourself.

I believe one of the most valuable practices of self-knowledge is to pay attention, for a period, to the choices you make when nobody is watching. Not to judge yourself, but to know yourself better.

Think of three small choices you make regularly in private, connected to time, pleasure, or comfort. Are they genuinely yours, from what you want, or are they shaped by what you think you should want? And what do these choices tell you about who you truly are?
