There are many blockchains that have smart contracts capable of collecting and selling NFTs, and I have continually falling in love with Tezos (XTZ) blockchain NFTs for a number of reasons. Incredibly low gas and minting fees, integrated purchasing and transferring NFTs, speed of transfers, and industry leading security measures combined have attracted artists to mint limited premium NFTs on marketplaces such as Rarible (https://rarible.com/), Teia (https://teia.art/), and Kalamint (https://kalamint.io). But say you are surfing through one of these marketplaces, and you see incredible potential in owning one of the NFTs offered, like our awesome Funny Flasks NFTs! How do you even go about purchasing it? This article will guide you in purchasing your first Tezos NFT on Rarible.
(Side note: If you already have XTZ in your DeFi Tezos wallet, you can jump directly to #3 on the list below! I will use Kukai as my wallet)
First off, a little bit on definitions, and we are going to use the 1/1 Funny Flask #97 Bk berkelium minting as an example, which you can find here: https://rarible.com/token/tezos/KT1DZ51VDhVVgHYJqFJMPbCtdxxoC2VK2tiw:202. The Funny Flasks Collection is a fun BakR_D0mains project created out of 118 unique computer-blown 1/1 Funny Flask NFTs. Funny Flasks are used as a distribution method for the ecosystem token: Atomic Mass Unit $AMU -> each purchased Funny Flasks NFT receives 5,000 $AMU airdropped directly to your wallet.
There are 7 properties - flask, mouth, eyes, stirbar, accessories, background, liquid - that have been randomly assembled for each Funny Flasks NFT, which makes a total of 6,480 possible combinations. Some Funny Flasks have rarer trait combinations than others, and you can view the total rarity scores here: Funny Flasks Rarity Table. Funny Flask #97 has a rarity score = 1.0, which is super rare!
NFT assets on Rarible are also financial assets, and can can be verified on the Tezos blockchain. The Funny Flasks Collection contract address is KT1DZ51VDhVVgHYJqFJMPbCtdxxoC2VK2tiw, and each individual Funny Flask is minted as a unique token.
OK, let's get on with the steps...
(1) To purchase this NFT, you must first have a decentralized Tezos wallet. While there are many fantastic wallets on the Tezos blockchain, I recommend going directly to the primary source at https://tezos.com/create-wallet and create either a Kukai wallet or a Temple wallet if you are new. (Notice I did not link directly to the setup of the wallets because security is important! Always validate your hyperlinks to avoid scams). Kukai has a very user friendly UI and the ability to view your NFTs directly in your browser, whereas Temple is a wallet that you can download and use on your phone. Follow the simple directions on the above website to create your Tezos wallet. Remember to write down your private seed phrase in a secure location. I will use the Kukai wallet to continue with this guide.
(2) In addition to a Tezos wallet, you need to purchase Tezos XTZ and send them to your wallet. You can buy Tezos directly from services like Coinbase, or if you are familiar with cryptocurrency exchange platforms, you can trade for Tezos.
Fun tip: If you want to just get your feet wet with NFTs without the risk of spending your own money, Coinbase has a rewards program where you can simply answer 3 quiz questions and earn $3 for certain crypto assets for free. At the time of this article, you can earn $3 in NEAR protocol. Simply convert these to XTZ and send them over. That's exactly how I started! For free!!
(3) Now you have XTZ in your Tezos wallet! Go to the Rarible main page (https://rarible.com) and click "Connect wallet" in the upper right hand corner. A selection window will open and you will have to click Tezos (see below). From the list, select Beacon - which is a dApp created by Beacon to aid in logging into platforms - to pick your DeFi Wallet to login.
And login using your preferred DeFi Tezos wallet. We will use Kukai wallet to login as an example, but the steps are similar for all wallets.
When you select the Kukai Wallet, a new window should open on your internet browser, and this is to confirm syncing with Rarible. (note: if a window does not appear, check your popup blocker! You might have to change some settings). A permissions request should appear in your Kukai wallet. Check that the account is correct and click "APPROVE".
Rarible also requires that you sign a message on the blockchain to confirm that you are older than 13 years of age. This is to publicly confirm that you are following their terms of server (TOS). Simply click "Sign" and you are on now prepared to purchase that cosmic berkelium puppy NFT!
(4) To claim this cosmic berkelium puppy Funny Flasks NFT, direct your browser back to Funny Flask #97 at https://rarible.com/token/tezos/KT1DZ51VDhVVgHYJqFJMPbCtdxxoC2VK2tiw:202 and click the button "Buy now for 5 XTZ".
A purchase overview window will appear to confirm you purchase. Click "Proceed to Payment" and you will notice a few prompts that appear in the top right of your screen. They will look like this:
This is your indication to check your Kukai Wallet to confirm the transaction. Depending on your browser, sometimes a window pops open automatically. I like to have both Rarible and Kukai open in different tabs while I'm purchasing an NFT. This prevents any hold up. The confirmation should look like below, and you simply have to click "CONFIRM" to approve the transaction and approve the message to collect the Funny Flasks NFT.

You have now anonymously been written into the history books! You can HODL this NFT or sell it yourself for a profit on Rarible. You can also send this NFT to a friend directly using your Kukai wallet for very small gas fees. The NFT will show up under your "NFT Collection" tab under "KT1DZ51VDhVVgHYJqFJMPbCtdxxoC2VK2tiw".
