The BIP-110 Dilemma: Why the Bitcoin Community is Drifting Apart Again

By Gabrielbg | DeFi Route | 10 hours ago

Bitcoin has always been known for its rigidity. "Move slow and don’t break things" is the unwritten rule of the network. But every now and then, a new proposal comes along that stirs the hornets' nest, and right now, everyone is talking about BIP-110.

If you’ve seen the latest trends on the feed, you know this isn’t just another boring technical update. It’s a debate that touches the very core of what Bitcoin should be.

Let’s break down what’s actually happening without the overcomplicated jargon.

What is BIP-110 Anyway?
At its heart, Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 110 (BIP-110) aims to introduce more flexibility into how transactions and smart contracts operate on the base layer. The goal? To make Bitcoin more compatible with the fast-moving Web3 and DeFi ecosystems without relying purely on Layer 2 networks.

Sounds great on paper, right? Well, it depends on who you ask.

The Two Sides of the Coin

1. The "DeFi on Bitcoin" Believers
Supporters argue that Bitcoin cannot afford to remain just a "digital store of value" forever. With networks like Solana and Ethereum capturing massive fee revenue through decentralized applications, Bitcoin needs to evolve. For these developers, BIP-110 is the bridge that allows Bitcoin to secure its own financial ecosystem natively.

2. The Hardcore Purists
On the other side of the ring, we have the maximalists. Their argument is simple: if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it. They believe that adding complexity to Bitcoin’s base layer compromises its security and predictability—the exact traits that make it the hardest money on Earth. To them, if you want DeFi, you should build it on Layer 2s, leaving the main chain untouched.

Why It Matters for Us
As a blog dedicated to the DeFi space, this debate is crucial. If proposals like BIP-110 eventually get activated, it could shift massive liquidity back from alternative chains into the Bitcoin network. It could change how we view yield farming, collateral, and trustless lending.

But for now, the community remains heavily divided, and a consensus seems far away.

What’s your take? Should Bitcoin evolve to support more complex DeFi features natively, or should it stick to being digital gold? Drop your thoughts in the comments, let's discuss!
