Walk&Talk 5: Meditation

Walk&Talk 5: Meditation

Daily activity

Today I went out right after the sunshine and walked fast in circles around the shopping centre, through the surrounding streets. It was one of the coldest days of the winter, so I wore a T-shirt and a light jumper. I do not usually wear jumpers because most of the time it´s not cold enough, and it´s too hot in any interior places. So, as today I wasn´t entering anywhere, it was the perfect day for using a jumper.

Meditation

Meditation si a practice to train attention, with the aim of reducing stress, anxiety, depression, pain, etc. The most common meditation technique consists on sit on a comfortable position, close your eyes and take a deep breath. After that, the breathing is allowed to reach a natural rhythm and the concentration is focused on the breath, a part of the body or any other calmed sensation, to reduce the thoughts in mind.

Meditation apps

There are several apps available for practising meditation. They offer voice guidance on several exercises, with relaxing music.

Headspace

Headspace is an app for Android and iOS that provides guided meditation. Between sessions it also has some assistance texts and videos. It has 10 free sessions and it costs 12,99€/month (with 1 free extra week for new users) or 57,99€/month (with 2 free extra weeks for new users) It also has a familiar plan for 6 persons for 74,99€/year, or 99,99$/year.

Meditopia

Meditopia is also available for Android ans iOS. Unlike Headspace, it does not include any videos but its free program is much longer than Headspace´s. It has an introduction program and other courses oriented to a certain objective (better sleeping, emotion control, etc) At the end of your meditation sessions you can write down your feelings, that way you can have a log of your results. The full version has a price of 7,99€/month, or 3,99€/month for 12 months. The full version also has a 7 days trial, but you will be charged automatically if you don´t cancel before the trial period ends.

Insight timer

Insight timer, also available for both Android and iOS, has the world´s largest free library of guided meditations, from many different teachers. Although it also has many guided courses, it doesn´t have an "official tutorial" like the other apps, so it may be a bit more confusing for starting at meditation. The full version costs 60$/year and it includes a 30-day free trial. It currently has a 50% discount offer. Like Meditopia, you won´t be charged if you cancel the subscription before the trial ends.

Conclusion

If you want a guided tutorial for starting meditation, I recommend you Meditopia. On the other hand, if you want to try different meditation techniques, I recommend you Insight Timer.
