One Pandemic Restriction I Will Miss

As most states have lifted coronavirus restrictions, the United States is getting back to "business as usual." However, this post is not intended to divulge my opinion on masks, the origin of COVID-19, or a pro/anti stance on vaccines. No, I want to stand on my digital soapbox and rant about one pandemic restriction that I will surely miss.

For me, it will be a sad day when those "keep 6 feet apart" markers are removed from stores. I have really enjoyed my personal space the past year and three months whilst standing in line at the grocery store, or waiting to pay for my coffee at the convenience store. Not once have I had to endure the insufferable experience of someone standing a mere inches away from me, barking into their cell phone - completely oblivious of the world around them. It has been a real pleasure not having to hear personal conversations broadcasted at an unacceptable decibel level.

I have actually been quite satisfied avoiding small talk while standing in line at the supermarket. No more "oh, are those any good?" or "wow, those bananas look ripe!" My nose has certainly been thankful too. Under no circumstances should the person waiting in the queue behind me be so close to me that I can smell they are overdue for a shower. Sorry, but we've all experienced it.

Apparently, there is actually a term for the phenomena I've described - proxemics, first coined by Edward T. Hall in 1963.

Throughout the past year and three months, I've realized I really do like personal space from people. I don't think it's unreasonable to dislike having someone breathing down your neck. I'm not asking for much; I understand six feet is a bit much. But please, when they remove those "keep 6 feet apart" stickers, continue to give me some distance. Maybe a foot. Or two. It's not that I'm concerned about the rona, just your aroma.
