311 or Sublime?

The title pretty much says it all. If you're not familiar with either band, Sublime and 311 were popular 90's alt-rock bands with heavy reggae influences.

Originally a "house party" band, Sublime propelled themselves to local fame in Southern California and gained legitimacy by releasing their first two albums under their own Skunk Records label and playing parties and small clubs. Sublime's run ended with the death of lead singer/guitarist Brad Nowell in 1996. Though the band has reformed with a new line-up and name, it's just not the same.

Admittedly, I don't know as much about 311's story other than they originally formed in Omaha, Nebraska. They have had a much longer run, and the band's core line-up has essentially remained unchanged for their 30+ year career.

This post is really just meant to drive some engagement here. For fans of 90's music, which band do you prefer? Why?

Myself, it's got to be Sublime. 311 obviously has a much larger catalogue and has had a longer run but, when it comes to music, it's quality not quantity. That's not to say that 311's music isn't quality. "Hive" is definitely one of their best songs. I have been listening to a lot of music from my youth lately, and it never really dawned on me until now the parallels between the music of the two bands. 311 definitely has more of a metallic sound, and Sublime draws more from dub influences.

But it's clear how the reggae tones can be heard in each artist's compositions. Both excellent beats, heavy bass, rippin' guitars, and outstanding lyrical flow. So, if you can only pick one band, which one is it?
