What you should know about Drake's "Scary Hours 2"
Today, on March 5, 2021, the Canadian rapper Aubrey Graham who is rather known as "Drake" released his EP "Scary Hours 2". As you can estimate from the title there was also a part one to it. Part one "Scary Hours" was released on January 19, 2018, so more than three years ago! It contained the singles "Diplomatic Immunity" as well as the world hit "God's plan". "Scary Hours 2" is his first release in 2021 and contains only three songs, but they are amazing.
What's Next
The EP starts off with a 2:58 minutes long solo track. In this track Drake raps on a typical Drake Type trap beat. He even released a music video for that song.
In the refrain he states "A boss is a role that I've grown into" which also refers to his part on 2018's "Going Bad" by Meek Mill, where he rapped: "You asked to see the boss, so they sent me, dawg (Sent me, dawg)". It is quite astonishing that in the beginning of his first verse of 2021 he refers to his debut mixtape "Room for Improvement" from 2006 by rapping "Man, how many times have I shown improvement?" I would say that the song is used to show the Hip-Hop scene that he is back, and he will be on top of Billboard again, and he does not have to "dress up the numbers"(he raps that in the end of Verse 2).
Wants and Needs
We could say that with a track length of 3:13 minutes this is like the main song of the EP. It features Lil Baby on it, and it is another trap song. The lyrics of Drake's Verse are pretty common for rap, he is showing off his status and his money, nothing rare. But the last line of his Verse caused a lot of traffic on Twitter as Drake raps:
"Yeah, I probably should go link with Yeezy, I need me some Jesus
But soon as I started confessin' my sins, he wouldn't believe us"
"Yeezy" is a nickname for Kanye West who reformed his image to be more religious in 2019 and became a born-again Christian. In the same year Kanye released his album "JESUS IS KING". "He wouldn't believe us" refers to Jesus, which is contradictory to what the Bible says as it says that everybody can give his life to Jesus and repent, no matter what he has done in his life.
Lil Baby got a fast flow in his part which he does not change throughout the whole Verse.
The allusions to God are present throughout the whole song as Drake begins the Chorus with "Sins, I got sins on my mind" and ends the Chorus and the whole song with the term "Amen".
Lemon Pepper Freestyle
The last song of "Scary Hours 2" is featuring Rick Ross and got a track length of incredible 6:24 minutes. It got a lay-back vibe and other than "What's next" and "Wants and Needs" the beat is not a hard trap beat. The vocal sample that you can hear throughout the whole song is from a live version of Quadron's March 2010 track "Pressure".
The song starts off with Rick Ross saying "Godfather with a garden full of snakes" which is a reference to the Garden of Eden where the devil incarnated as a snake to persuade Eve to bite an apple from the forbidden tree. In the end of his Verse he pays a homage to 2Pac's song "All Eyez on Me" with the line: "Death row, that's for these [...], I'ma hit 'em up
Makaveli, it's All Eyez on Me"
After Rick Ross's part Drake flows on the beat for over four minutes which is pretty long, but I personally like it! In the Verse he makes references to his son Adonis Graham having a good co-parent relationship with his mother Sophie Brussaux and going to school.
My personal rating
I liked the EP a lot even though it was only a little over 12 minutes long. My favorite song was Wants and Needs featuring Lil Baby, who had an amazing part on the song, but I also liked the chilled style of Lemon Pepper Freestyle.
