What is a Smart Contract?

For the longest time I used to scan over what I considered to be the more complex elements of crypto but in recent times I have decided to take a deeper dive into what makes the cryptoverse tick and next on my list is Smart Contracts. This is the exemplar of that kind of term that I would just take at face value and assume those who were writing knew what it was all about.

Anyhow here is my take on what a smart contract is :)

Smart contracts, a key element of the inner workings of the crytoverse, are self-executing programs that are stored on a blockchain. Their primary purpose is to automatically enforce the terms of an agreement when predetermined conditions are met, based on rules determined by Boolean logic. Thus they are used in the automation of transactions and processes, like digital asset transfers, without needing to go through a central authority or intermediary such a bank or money broker (and there again is the unbanking dream). These contracts are designed to be transparent, secure, and irreversible once deployed on the blockchain.

To enable them to function, the terms of the agreement are written directly into lines of code so that they can  automatically execute the contract's actions when the conditions are met (please let me know if you wish to explore the principles of Boolean logic), this can then for example release a payment when a product is confirmed as delivered. This is just one of many functions. The smart contract “lives” and runs on a decentralised blockchain, which ensures it's tamper-proof and transparent to all participants. To think about it in day to day terms it is like ordering a snack from a vending machine. In effect the smart contract is just like the machine's programming that matches an order complete with payment to a product before dispensing the correct snack (unless it gets jammed of course – but thankfully that doesn’t happen on the blockchain).

The most important aspects of Smart Contracts (and to some extent to reiterate what I have already said is that they are decentralised and operate on a peer-to-peer network. Being self-executing they automatically trigger and enforce actions without human intervention and furthermore they are. Immutable and once deployed, the contract's code cannot be altered, and transactions are permanently recorded on the blockchain. Consider the contrast with DNA which is permanently open to mutation, which is the core of evolutionary theory. Naturally this makes the whole process completely transparent for all of those involved.

Smart contracts are not just a fancy name for some abstraction within the blockchain. After all, smart contracts are central to decentralised Finance (DeFi) because they enable financial activities like lending, borrowing, and trading digital assets without a traditional bank and are key to. supply chain management through the automating of processes and improving transparency by tracking goods as they move through the chain. Within gaming smart contracts can be used  to creating in-game economies and ensure the integrity of digital items.  Further more smart contracts can be use for fraudless voting (Good morning, Mr. Trump) due to the code’s immutability and can be used to automatically distribute royalty payments to artists.

So all in all there is more to smart contracts then you first thought. They are not an abstraction nor a jargon phrase they are essential to the effective running of the blockchain with a wide range of real-world applications.

If you want to think about Smart Contracts in a simplistic way just consider them to be sophisticated "Boolean Algorithms".

As always stay safe and well my friends.
