Following on from what I wrote yesterday about the way cats uniquely have taken control of us in stark contradiction to what has happened with every other living being on the planet I want to share with you something I came across a few days ago that explains a lot of cat behaviour. While I have sourced it from elsewhere I have added my own perculiar twist where and when possible and it's all a bit of fun anyway

1. If your cat licks your hands, face, or hair, take it as a big compliment. It's grooming you as "one of its companions."
2. If your cat is lying on its back and looking at you, it's a sign of trust in you. In this position, it's vulnerable to attack. Cats rarely do this and if you pick them up and try to roll them belly up - like a baby - this is why they fight for their lives. It is an expression of vulnerability, but don't push it!
3. People who own cats experience less stress and have a lower risk of heart attacks; its just the way they nuzzle into you, but beware they might be looking to mark their territory. When I was a teenager one of my cats did this by creeping under the newspaper which I thought was really cut until I felt the warm wet seeping through my jeans - disgusting! Fortunately in most cases they are content to just rub against you, it's enough of a sign to show that it's marking you as part of its territory.
4. Cats are the masters of the household, at least coexisting with humans and more often than not being the dominant partner.
5. Cats rarely meow at other cats. This sound is used to communicate with humans.
6. If a cat holds its tail up and stretches it completely upwards, it's a sign of greeting. Cat song - screeching - is one of the most abominable sounds known to humans who are attempting to sleep at night!
7. Cats respond better to men than women, so they tend to be more considerate towards women. They are also sensitive to the tone of voice.
8. If your cat becomes ill and can no longer clean itself, please wash it for it. If a cat is dirty and neglected, it may lose the will to live.
9. Cats don't understand punishment, but they do understand rewards when they do something good.
10. Cats sleep 16 to 18 hours a day. However, they are sensitive to stimuli even while sleeping.
11. Cats have excellent night vision.
12. Cats clean themselves immediately after eating. This is a survival instinct, a behavior to eliminate the scent of prey and avoid being detected by predators.
13. Cats walk and run by moving their front and back legs on the same side. This characteristic is unique to camels, giraffes, and cats.
14. Cats absolutely hate the smell of oranges and lemons.
15. A cat's purring has the ability to calm itself down when it feels sick or frightened.
16. The ancient Egyptians would show their condolences to their deceased cats by shaving their eyebrows into the shape of the letter 'll'.
17. Just as humans have fingerprints, the design of each cat's nose cushion is unique, and no two cats have the same design.
18. Black cats are generally calmer than white cats. White cats are always nervous.
19. A cat's tongue is made up of tiny hooks that help it tear food apart. This is why it feels rough to the touch.
20. Chocolate is toxic to cats as it is to dogs.
21. Cats can hear ultrasound. This means they can hear sounds at frequencies that you can't hear, such as the sounds mice use to communicate.
22. There is a plant that fascinates cats. It is called "cat mint," also known as Nepeta cataria, and belongs to the same family as perilla and lavender. Its fragrance brings cats a moment of temporary bliss and triggers behaviors similar to those of a female in heat.
