Hodling ALTs - A Fool's Game?

Hodling ALTs - A Fool's Game?

Today I am writing without research and just going with a gut feeling of what will follow. To be honest I have no idea how this post will pan out - although I will obviously go back and review it (but without changing any content - just smoothing it over).

I got into crypto and was initially trading somewhat naively and not really making any headway and even some heavy losses. I remember pumping a lot of my fund into Kyber after following the buzz and build up to a major network announcement which had just the opposite effect.

Then I came across hodling, and just a curiosity that many of you know all ready, but just in case you don't hodling is actually the result of misspelling holding and for some reason it caught hold. So with a diverse portfolio I made some really good gains a few years ago on Loopring and Tezos, but then with an attitude of rinse and repeat I decided to do the same most notably with ATOM and BAND.

My feeling was that if I bought at less than 50% of its all time high then surely it will in the long run pay off.

ATOM has been a disaster but nothing like the implosion I have faced with BAND which now holds only 1% of the investment value I put into it. This has been exaccabated by my attempts to make the occasional trade to grow the amount of BAND I am holding so that it will in turn reduce the required Break / Even or even profit price.

It still represents my worst individual disaster to this day and what is more I have actually wiped out those massive gains I made on Loopring and TEZOs early on. So it really is a case of one step forwards and three steps back.

Then my Celsius also imploded. I had build up quite a nice amount on it which was staking and adding daily to my stock of crypto. One thing that I did which helped soften the landing was that I withdrew all of my USDC interest just a couple of weeks before the collapse with the intention of moving over to an "investing interest only".

All in all this was my lowest point and my total portfolio had dropped down below my "get out" point of 40%. Then, just as I was looking to get out of the game totally, I got some funds back from Celsius that amounted to what I had directly invested. I lost all the staking rewards and free stuff that I had been building up from Publish0x and Noise;Cash most notably.

And after that I became extremely cautious. I moved too soon on both Ethereum and BitCoin, but at least I moved the to USDC that was staking and finally I was in profit and adding to my portfolio.

I have made a few minor adjustments since then, until Saturday when I had to go with what my research was showing me. BitCoin has hit a low enough price for me to go in big and that is what I have done.

As for hodling ALTs, I have been burnt way too often and now I hope that contextualised the reason I devised a race between Solana and LiteCoin; I am generally focusing on adding with free currency and the race just makes it interesting.

I am still carrying 16 of the 30 BAND I originally had and they won't even buy me a beer. I have basically written them off and maybe I will just dump them into one of my staking currencies that I feel a bit more optimistic about.

Ok, so that was a bit shot from the heart, but I guess my conclusion is that with ALTs (apart from maybe Ethereum) it is a risky proposition and the normal rules apply. High Risk = High Reward / Losses. My biggest strategic mistake early on was not to consolidate my gains on Loopring and TEZOs but to jump onto the next ALT.

What we do with profit matters as much as making the profit.

As always stay safe and well my friends.
