When DeepSeek was launched it appeared to be a challenger to the dominant ChatGPT model that, as a household name, had already established itself and there were numerous concerns about the potential politisation of its information with it being based in China. However, we need to get beyond the superficial and take a real look at what is going on. While they are essentially AI assistants there are some notable differences and particularly with the kind of tasks they are able to handle.
As a model, ChatGPT is more polished than DeepSeek which despite being hosted in China is transparent and open source. DeepSeek is significantly more cost effective (i.e. free – ChatGPT is only free at entry level) and better suited to coding and mathematical tasks whereas ChatGPT feels more intuitive, given its conversational nuance and creativity. It does mean that ChatGPT is much better suited to education, research, creative writing and productivity rather than logic-based tasks.
ChatGPT’s key advantage lie its multimodal capabilities (text, image generation, voice, reasoning modes and adaptive GPT-5.1 routing which automatically balances speed with depth. Furthermore, it feels more intuitive with its developed creative writing, nuanced conversation, and contextual memory capabilities.
On the other hand, DeepSeek draws on its Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) design which allows massive scale with efficiency and trust in sparse attention and reinforcement learning innovations to boost reasoning and long-context handling. DeepSeek seems, on a comparative level, to be better at handing mathematical and coding tasks and with it being more cost efficient and committed to an open-source approach it is particularly attractive for enterprises and developers
At the end of the day, it really depends on what you are looking for. Choose ChatGPT if you want a versatile, polished assistant for creativity, productivity, and everyday use and choose DeepSeek if you prioritise affordability, open-source transparency, and advanced reasoning/coding performance, with it valuing performance over polish.
Or simply use Co-Pilot, which I reviewed recently, as it is effectively ChatGPT for free!
As always stay safe and well my friends.
