Automated Trading: Do Trading Bots Really Work?

Automated Trading: Do Trading Bots Really Work?

What Do The Stats Say?

Trading bots and automated systems have been around for a while. However, I have generally avoided them for one reason: profitability. Statistically speaking, the average trading bot yields between 0.5% and 3% per month. However, trading bots on exchanges, particularly Pionex, have reported much higher returns for some of their built-in trading bots. As an active trader, I can very easily outperform this return.

In many cases, buying and holding for a year outperforms what trading bots can accomplish in a year. However, there have been many recent cases of bots built on Claude, and they're very efficient. A trading bot is only as effective as its predefined protocols and trading rules. This is what encouraged me to package my strategies as automated software.

If you want to know more about what I have been building, check out my latest article on sapphirecrypto.org. I am currently live-testing an enhanced version of my original trading bot, which backtested a monthly return of 24.7% from 12 September to 12 October 2026. However, this was a fairly bullish period, so my current live test will be very revealing, as November has not been the greatest so far.

Security & Risk Management

API keys should only allow the required permissions. Always turn off withdrawal permissions, regardless of the bot or strategy. However, this mainly applies to developers who build and connect their own systems to exchanges via API keys. However, using a bot on a platform like Pionex or KuCoin is different. The exchange already facilitates the process and provides the data.

This is perhaps where interested parties should begin. It's a cost-effective way of testing the idea without any capital outlay or development. Risk management remains one of the most important aspects of trading, whether active or automated. This includes capital deployment. If you get this right, trades tend to fall into place more often, and you often avoid large losses.

Identifying & Executing Successful Trades

How a bot identifies a trade candidate is imperative. This can mean the difference between success and being stopped out. Furthermore, an exit strategy is more than a TP point. It often includes stop-losses, appropriate exit zones based on current price action, and profit maximization without taking on unnecessary risk.

My strategies are rather unique and focus strongly on risk management. In other words, existing bots are unlikely to replicate my trading protocols and procedures. So developing my own was the next obvious move. You need a bot or system that matches your trading style and view of the market. Sure, you can hook up to any bot. However, understanding the process is a valuable advantage.

Final Thoughts

Do bots work? Yes and no. Without proper testing and a system that actually works, bots are likely to be unprofitable. However, given effective development, design, and testing, they can be very lucrative, especially as they can scan and trade the market 24/7, unlike you. Personally, I'm excited about the future of automated trading; what about you? All the best! See you next time!
