Big week for Joby eVTOL
It's been several months since I posted about eVTOL updates that last was here. This week Joby Aviation (Joby) is under the spotlight to display how well the eVTOL performs under live trials. Yes, actual flight trails, not in the middle of nowhere but, the trails are to take place in New York City (NYC). Starting April 27th Joby begins testing flights across the local regions skyports over a full week.
Federal Regulations - you know there had to be there
FAA introduced the eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP) to accelerate the safe deployment of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) vehicles in the National Airspace System. Joby was one of eight proposals accepted to participate in the eIPP program. They are under the microscope this week for all intensive purposes!
Joby's ecosystem
Joby has partnerships with Delta Airlines and Uber to create a full system to dramatically cut travel times in NYC. Specifically from JFK to destinations in Manhattan. Covering all offering so, air and ground transportation to reduce travel times from hours to less than ten (10) minutes.
Joby also stated they are working through the final stages of FAA certification. Where pilots can begin for-credit testing, a crucial step for commercial flight operations. Not just for Joby but all the eVTOL pioneers!
Not all has been ironed out just yet.
One task outstanding is NYC must electrify the Skyports and Heliports to support these new eVTOL offerings. The organization responsible for that task is known as NYCEDC which fully spelled out is New York City Economic Development Corp. and they did not release when the electrification project will complete as it is due to start mid-2026 (https://edc.nyc/press-release/nycedc-unveils-downtown-skyport-new-operator-takes-over-city-owned-heliport)
