Global Debt Hits Record $324 Trillion, Fueled by Government Spending

Debt equals money. But the money side of this $324 trillion is very unevenly distributed. A few people own most of it, while the rest are stuck hustling just to keep up. It’s a dysfunctional system. I don’t know if crypto is any better in this regard, but I know for sure this system is garbage trash.

The Institute of International Finance just reported that global debt has hit an all-time high of $324 trillion. That’s governments, businesses, and households combined. The biggest driver? Government spending. Countries are borrowing heavily to patch up economies, deal with inflation, and cover the fallout from recent crises.

Debt isn’t automatically bad, it can fund infrastructure, create jobs, and boost growth. But when the debt pile gets this massive and interest rates are rising, it becomes a time bomb. Servicing the debt starts eating into budgets, meaning less money for healthcare, education, and public services.

And while the burden spreads across taxpayers and ordinary citizens, the benefits mostly flow upward. Wealthy individuals and institutions hold the assets and investments that grow in value during these debt-driven spending sprees. Everyone else is left to carry the load.

Crypto might not be the perfect alternative, but it’s one of the few systems built to move away from this kind of centralized control. Whether it succeeds or not is still up for debate.

For now, $324 trillion is more than just a scary headline. It’s proof that the current financial setup is rigged, and unless something changes, the gap between the ones holding the money and the ones paying the bills is only going to get wider.
