Boris Yeltsin's decisive mistake was his refusal to eliminate the KGB in August 1991. This decision predetermined the development of the Russian political system towards "despotism." Saving the KGB looks like a missed chance to "clean up" the system.

One of Yeltsin's main mistakes, so disastrous that it bordered on a crime, was the refusal to abolish, to completely disband, the KGB. In August 1991, Yeltsin was supposed to break into the Lubyanka building with the crowd - the crowd wanted it, was ready. All archives, all file cabinets had to be declassified, all KGB personnel throughout the country had to be removed from the staff, weapons had to be handed over to the Interior Ministry. All former KGB officers had to be immediately and permanently banned from holding any positions in government.

The KGB should have been declared a criminal organization. It was necessary to place a Museum of Terror on the Lubyanka.

All this should have been done in 1991, no later. But it wasn't done at all.

Instead, Yeltsin, having taken power, decided: "Let them be!" They will come in handy in the coming fights for the retention of this power.

The KGB has entered the stage of renaming and reorganizing. They sat behind the Lubyanka curtains and smartly jumped back into life - into a new statehood, into a new economy. A long but steady recovery process has begun.

Talking about the Yeltsin roots of Russian despotism, they call it 1996 or 1993.
