Zen blog post in Russian

Well, here we go again about VPN. It's serious now: starting on April 15, major sites like Ozon, Wildberries, and VK are required to restrict access for users with a VPN enabled. If they don't, they risk losing the accreditation of the Ministry of Finance and so on. Companies are likely to comply. So, I turn on the VPN and I'm just thrown out of the app.
Roskomnadzor has already blocked 439 VPN resources this year. They are also going to connect AI for 2.3 billion to analyze traffic. In addition, they are discussing the introduction of fees for this VPN traffic (over 15 GB per month) and have already banned payment via Apple ID since April 1. In principle, buying a normal service is already a problem.
At the same time, officials themselves admit that it is technically impossible to completely ban VPNs. But they continue to tighten. And there have already been failures — for example, on April 3, many people associate problems on the Internet with these experiments.
I am not a network technology specialist. I just want to go to the website or watch a video. And they advise me to rent servers abroad and set up complex protocols. This is no longer for the average person.
It seems that the goal is not to ban a VPN, but to make it so inconvenient that they themselves abandon it. Mass services will die. There will only be difficult options for those who are ready to figure it out.
I'm just tired of having to find workarounds every time. And it's unclear what will happen in six months.
There is no complete ban on VPNs in Russia right now, but the pressure on them is increasing dramatically and tougher measures are being discussed.
In fact, there is a gradual tightening of the screws:
- Hundreds of VPN services have been blocked (400-470+).
- VPN applications are being removed from stores.
- Increased technical filtering of traffic (DPI, etc.).
- Access to services like Telegram is limited.
- The authorities want to "reduce VPN usage."
- Discussed: automatic VPN detection, obligations for platforms to block users from VPNs, possible fines, even surcharges for "international traffic".
Many IT companies have suspended projects due to the uncertainty of VPN regulation. Business representatives pointed out that the proposed measures could create problems in a number of areas, such as medicine, education, and esports. Experts noted that restrictions could lead to digital inequality, as access to international content would become more expensive and more difficult.
The situation remains dynamic, and further steps depend on the technical implementation of the proposed measures and the reaction of business and society.
For the average user, most likely, the usual "push-button" free VPN services will stop working or will be so unstable that it will become impossible to use them. The authorities are moving from blocking individual sites to "cleaning up" all traffic, and mass solutions will die first.
There will still be more complex ways (renting a personal server abroad, advanced protocols), but they will require special knowledge and time to set up.
If you use a simple free or inexpensive commercial VPN, be prepared for the fact that it may stop working at any time, especially after April 15th.
Most likely, this will not be a "red button" with a complete ban on the Internet, but a gradual but steady compression of space, when access to the open web becomes the privilege of tech-savvy people.
