4 films that break illusions. Documentaries, after which you can not dismiss.
AFTER THAT, ROMANCE DIES.
The list is as dark as possible — without heroes, without hope, without illusions. Here politics is not an institution, but an environment where people survive, break and adapt.
Power is almost always a choice between bad or very bad. If you're looking for "justice" in politics, these films will quickly explain why it's a bad strategy.
1) The Fog of War (2003). Decisions are made in a fog, and the consequences are forever.
The hangman's lessons that you won't learn. This is not a movie. This is the confession of a serial killer in a tie. The basic and familiar mantra of such executioners: "I was just following orders" and "To do good, you may have to do evil." If you are imbued with these wise phrases, you are the target of this propaganda, an object for brainwashing. The truth is that power corrupts, and elites will never answer for corpses. And while you're thinking about it, the new executioners are already destroying other countries, declaring war on them.
This is not a story — this is a mirror where you will see modern politicians who promise a "quick victory", consider losses to be "statistics", blame the "enemy" for everything, never speak: "We made a mistake. We are to blame." The "fog of war" is a diagnosis of a system where the government decides who to kill and who to save, and calls it a "strategy."
Watch "The Fog of War" and you'll understand how you've been deceived for years about "just wars," "necessary sacrifices," and "victory at any cost." Watch "The Fog of War". Get angry. Remember that. Don't be fooled again. Until the next war became "necessary" in someone's calculations.
2) Citizenfour: The Truth of Snowden (Citizenfour) (2014). Not "about surveillance," but about the fact that the system has already been built, and it's working. This movie is proof that we live in the Matrix.
If you still think that "no one is watching you" — check out Citizenfour. This is not a conspiracy theory. This is a document where a person with access to the system shows how total surveillance works. Not selective. Not "for the suspicious." For everyone. The most annoying thing is not the scale. And the reaction. There was a scandal. There was evidence. And... nothing has changed. Everyone understood everything and just moved on with their lives. That's the main conclusion of the film: you don't have to hide the truth if people accept it anyway.
3) The Act of Killing (2012). The government can rewrite reality so that murderers become heroes.
If it seems to you that evil is always hiding, watch The Act of Killing. There are no killers hiding there. They're laughing. They brag. And they re—enact their crimes -like a movie. Without remorse. Without fear. Without punishment. This is a film about what happens when evil wins — and begins to write history. The worst thing here is not violence. And the normality of what is happening. When murder becomes a "feat" and the executioners are respected people, society is no longer broken. It's been flashed. And there is almost no way back.
4) Hypernormalization (2016). People live in an artificial "understandable" reality because the real one is too complicated.
Take a look at HyperNormalisation if you want to understand why there is a sense of falsity around. This is a film about how the world stopped being real. Politicians don't solve problems — they paint a convenient picture. The systems are not working — they are simulating the work. Everyone understands everything. But they pretend that everything is fine. This is "hypernormalization" — when lies become so familiar that they are perceived as reality. The most unpleasant thing is that no one believes anymore. But no one changes anything either. The ideal system: everyone knows that this is a performance, and they continue to play roles.
