The question of the justification of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki remains one of the most controversial in history, and now many Russians often disapprovingly recall this to America.
There are several points of view:
Arguments in favor of the justification of the bombing:
1. Accelerating the end of the war – The United States claimed that the atomic strikes forced Japan to capitulate faster, avoiding a protracted and bloody invasion of the Japanese islands.
2. Saving lives – According to the calculations of the American command, the operation to capture Japan (plan "Downfall") could have led to the deaths of millions of Japanese and hundreds of thousands of Americans. That is, there would have been victims anyway.
Arguments against:
1. Massive civilian casualties – The bombings and their aftermath claimed more than 200,000 lives, most of which were civilians.
2. Japan was already on the verge of surrender – Some historians believe that the blockade, bombing by conventional means and the entry of the USSR into the war with Japan (August 8, 1945) made its surrender inevitable. Judging this after many years is, of course, easier.
Conclusion:
The assessment of justification depends on what is considered a priority: a quick end to the war and minimizing losses on the one hand, or humanitarian consequences and moral aspects on the other.
Those who, on the one hand, condemn America, but on the other hand, urge to do the same with Ukraine, should also think about this. Peaceful people live there too.
