4 TV series without heroes and illusions. These films are pure cynicism: how power really works. The system is like a trap.
AFTER THAT, ROMANCE DIES.
The list is as dark as possible — without heroes, without hope, without illusions. Here politics is not an institution, but an environment where people survive, break and adapt.
Power is almost always a choice between bad or very bad. If you're looking for "justice" in politics, these films will quickly explain why it's a bad strategy.

1) The Wire (TV series 2002-2008). This film is an instruction on how everything works. The best thing about the system. Politicians, police, media — everything is tied up. You don't change the system — the system digests you.
Each frame contains a textbook on how the state creates crimes in order to fight them solemnly. How the system sucks your soul out of you, turns you into a cog, and then spits you out. And the worst part is that you're inside. You'll watch one episode, one season, and you'll be waiting for a happy ending. No, he won't be here. The system grinds people, and next season new ones arrive. The series will end. The system is not.
In the final season, there's a phrase that explains the entire series, where the killer tells a guy who doubts: "Deserved — undeserved — it has nothing to do with it."
This is the law of the world. Not justice. Not "who's right." It's the dumb, mechanical work of the system. If you get in the way, you're dead. Whether you deserve it or not doesn't matter. The series shows that the problem is not in the "bad people", but in the system.
Politicians steal, they don't care. An honest cop goes to jail for speeding. A teacher who tries to save children burns out in a year. A journalist who writes the truth gets scolded by the editor. This is your city. This is your country. Isn't that right? The Wire is about a universal cattle management model. About how "democracy" actually looks like a dirty den where you are expendable. Replace the street names with your own. Replace the cops with your police. Replace unions with your factories. Replace the school with your school. Absolutely nothing will change.
We live in a world where "deserved" doesn't work. Where "guilty" is not punished. Where the truth doesn't make you free, it makes you disappointed, fired, lonely, drunk.
You are not a spectator. You are a character. And if you still haven't figured out which side you're on in this hierarchy of darkness, then you've already lost. This series will not entertain you. It will awaken — and make you look at the world around you differently.

2) Gomorrah (TV series 2014-2021). About power in its purest form. Sometimes there is almost no difference between the state and crime. Power is simply the control of flows (money, fear, people).
Stop whining about the "harsh reality" of a "Brother" or "The Words of a kid." Sit down and watch Gomorrah. There are no heroes here. Generally. Not a single one. No "noble don". No "cops with principles." Not even an antihero to worry about. There is only business. There are no monologues about "justice" in the film. There are no scenes where the character says, "I'm leaving." There is only silent work. No one betrays anyone here. Everyone is just fulfilling contracts. After Gomorrah, you will never be able to watch glossy crime series again. This is a film about a state without a tie. There are no godfathers here. There are no beautiful dialogues. There are no rules. There is dirt. Fear. And a system where people are expendable. This is not a story about criminals. This is an economy in which killing is just part of the business process. Without pathos and without heroes. And if you still believe in the "romance of crime," then you've just watched the wrong movies.

3) ZeroZeroZero (TV series 2020). The global world is a chain of dirty deals.
The theme is the same as in Gomorrah, but with stakes at the level of a global catastrophe. There are no evil guys here. And there are no good ones. Generally. ZeroZeroZero is not about drugs. It's about the globalization of evil.
If you think drugs are "the street and the dealers," check out ZeroZeroZero. It's not about crime. It's about global business. Cartels, banks, corporations, security forces — everything is in the chain. Everyone earns money. Everyone pretends that it's not their responsibility. Tons of cocaine move across continents, and with them, money, blood, and power. No one controls the system. But everyone depends on it. The most unpleasant thing is not the underground. It is part of the global economy. There are no heroes and no morals. Only profit and consequences.
"No one forced us," says one character. "We were just doing our job." And in this series, there is not a single act that can be called kind. At least there was a longing for humanity in Gomorrah. There are only deals here. And when someone says, “we are fighting the drug empire,” they simply transfer the goods to another container. ZeroZeroZero is a series about us. About an era where morality is cheaper than a kilogram of raw sugar.
The series will be watched to the end. But the global supply will continue on schedule. The system shown in the series is working right now. This series will not entertain you. It will break the illusions and show that while you think that "it's none of your business," the system has already considered you part of the chain. ZeroZeroZero is not about cocaine. It's about how the thirst for profit turns a civilization into a cartel.

4) The Government (Borgen) (TV series 2010-2022). Every compromise is a small betrayal.
If you still believe that politics is about principles, check out Borgen. There are no "clean solutions". There are deals. Every right decision is worth a compromise. Every compromise is a step back from what you believed in. And the higher you go, the less choice you have. This is not a series about power. This is a series about the price of power. The most annoying thing is that the system doesn't break people right away. She does it gradually. And at some point you don't understand anymore.: you control the system, or it has been controlling you for a long time.
"Borgen is not a series about politics. This is a series about corpses under the silk curtains of power. On the screen — smooth faces, noble slogans, coffee, meetings, “values". And behind the scenes is a machine for processing human principles into ratings and ministerial posts. Borgen shows that democracy is just a well—rehearsed play, where the script is written by those who know how to lie beautifully and without trembling in their voice. The power here is not a struggle of ideas, but an accounting of interests. Morality is just an inscription on an advertising poster. And when the prime minister talks about freedom of speech from the screen, censorship budgets are already being counted below. Borgen is a state without makeup. It was cold and calculating, like a press release about a crisis of conscience. The series will end. But the play goes on every day — live on the news.
This film is about the slow suicide of an idealist. This is a documentary about paradise lost. The series shows that the government does not change people — it checks them. And most of them don't pass the check.
