Dark films about control and hopelessness. Films that reveal the mechanism of control and fear that deform people.

Power is almost always a choice between bad or very bad. If you're looking for "justice" in politics, these films will quickly explain why it's a bad strategy.

AFTER THAT, ROMANCE DIES.

The list is as dark as possible — without heroes, without hope, without illusions. Here politics is not an institution, but an environment where people survive, break and adapt.

Control, fear, deformation

1) The Lives of Others (2006). The truth about totalitarianism does not age — it becomes more relevant with each software update. Until you start asking questions, surveillance will be the norm.

The drama is about an employee of the secret police of the GDR, who follows the playwright and gradually becomes imbued with his life and ideals. The central themes of the film are control, conscience and the influence of art on moral principles. Even a cog in the system starts to break, but it's too late. If you still think that the system is "not that scary" — check out The Lives of Others.

This film is an instruction on how any control works. There is no torture. There are no high-profile arrests. It's worse there — the quiet, methodical destruction of man. Wiretapping. Pressure. Fear. Self-censorship. When you're already afraid to think too much. The most disgusting thing is how quickly normal people become part of the system. How easily they justify surveillance. How quickly they get used to being watched. And how imperceptibly the boundary between "security" and total control disappears. Take a look and then try to calmly say, "I have nothing to hide."

The Lives of Others is a film about the time when you were imprisoned for the truth. It's easier now: you submit it yourself — to stories, to the cloud, to "agree to the terms". You gave up your life yourself—for convenience, likes, and the illusion of security. They didn't even have to break down the door. You opened it. The repression was optimized. Thank you for your cooperation.

2) Brazil (Brazil) (1985). An absurd bureaucracy is scarier than open violence. Terry Gilliam's Brazil is not a fantasy thriller, but a prophetic mirror in which you will see the real essence of any system: a soulless, absurd, ruthless bureaucracy. The action takes place in a dystopian world where a piece of paper is more important than a person, and a mistake in a document can cost a life. The main character Sam Lauri, a cog in the system, accidentally falls under its millstones. And you can too. At any moment.

For a while. Some place. A bureaucratic hell where one mistake on a form turns an innocent person into a terrorist. The main character Sam Lowry is a small—time clerk at the Ministry of Information. He doesn't want a promotion. He doesn't want power. All he wants is to be left alone. But the system does not leave. No one. Never. Because of a dead fly that got into the printer, instead of "Archibald Tuttle", "Archibald Battle" is arrested. An ordinary person. A family man. Who is being tortured to death because "information is needed at any cost." Sam tries to fix the mistake. And for this he is declared an enemy of the state.

If there's a Big Brother in Orwell's 1984. There's no one in Brazil. Just the system. Faceless, mechanical, working like a clock. Every cog does its job. Everyone follows orders. Everyone "just obeys. "In this world, everyone has innocent faces, but everyone participates in bloody deeds." Do you recognize it? Your boss. Your district police officer. The judge who stamps the sentences. The doctor who signs the false diagnoses. They are all cogs. And no one feels guilty. And the main character is you. However, Sam Lowry is not a hero. He's a coward. He hates his job. But it comes every day. He's scared. But he's not quitting. He dreams of a beautiful woman and a free life — but only in his dreams . In reality, he obeys. He's silent. Tolerates it. And then — an accident. Mistake. He falls in love with a woman who has been declared a terrorist by the system. And he has a choice: turn her in and stay warm, or help her and become an enemy. He chooses the latter. And the system breaks it. There is no happy ending in this movie. Because in real life, the system always wins. And those who resist the system are declared terrorists, imprisoned, and recognized as "foreign agents." Brazil is not a movie about the future. This is a movie about today. It's now 2026. Nothing has changed. Do you have any "erroneous" arrests in your country? There is. Are there people who are being tortured for "information"? There is. Is there a system where there are no guilty parties? There is. And most importantly, there is you. Sam Lowry. Who sits at his job, hates his superiors, and dreams of freedom… And he doesn't do anything. You're waiting for a miracle. You're waiting for someone to come and fix everything. That someone would show up and save the world. He won't appear. In the finale, Sam sits in a torture chair. They're implanting electrodes in his head. And he's... happy. Because his mind has escaped into a dream world where he is free. The two executioners look at him and say, "He's gone too far. We lost him." They didn't kill his body. They killed his soul. And do you know what the scariest thing is? He is grateful to them for this. Welcome to Brazil.

3) The human Child (Children of Men) (2006). Crisis and fear are an ideal environment for tight control.

The director showed the limit — what remains when society no longer has a future. And then everything disappears: rights, values, meaning. Only survival remains. Take a look and ask yourself a simple question: if there is no future tomorrow, how much of your "civilization" will remain?

This story is not about space and lasers. This story is about you. You've given up. You're drinking. You hate your job. You're pretending you don't care. And when the time comes to act, you go. Not because you're a hero. But because there is no choice. The only question is whether you'll make it to the end of the movie. Or you'll die in the first scene, in a cafe, where you just drink coffee and look out the window.

Hopelessness is the norm here. There is hope. But she's blind, dirty, and most likely going to die. But when hope for the future disappears, humanity itself will disappear. As long as we close our eyes to the pain of others, the world is getting closer to that very line. Ask yourself: What am I doing to make the future happen?
