Contemporaries rarely realize the scale of what is happening in real time. Understanding that a new world war has begun will come later - when the scale becomes obvious.
I recently read a very accurate remark about the notorious World War III from Igal Levin (historian, PhD): most people will not immediately realize that they are living in the era of the Third World War. Just like most people in the late 30s and early 40s did not realize that World War II was underway. None of his contemporaries considered the beginning of World War II to be either September 1, 1939, or even September 3, the day when Great Britain and France declared war on Germany. And even in the chain of European blitzkriegs of the Wehrmacht in 1940-1941, few saw the Second World War. And even more so, few Europeans thought that the massacre of the Japanese and Chinese that unfolded in the 1930s somewhere in Asia was the emerging eastern focus of this new world war.
As Yigal correctly noted in his post, for his contemporaries it was just a series of conflicts that did not stand next to the scale and significance of the World War, the Great War of 1914-1918.
The realization that the world was roaring into World War II came much later, when the balloon was already ablaze.
So now, no one will declare World War III with Levitan's voice. If it starts, it will start gradually. The fires will flare up, then even temporarily fade out, then flare up again, merging with each other, acquiring a common logic of gorenje. They may be different from each other. How different were the tank battles near Kursk, the battles in the jungles of Papua New Guinea, and the clashes between the Ustasha and the Chetniks, who slaughtered each other in the Bosnian mountains.
But all this was subordinated and will be subordinated to the main historical process.
So no one in the West noticed the beginning of the Second Cold War in 2014-2015, and there were those who denied it even after 2022.
The world of wars, or the world of war, whatever you want to call it, but it has begun and will last. A world where ideas and principles are worthless without the willingness to use force for them. A world where freedom can be preserved only by killing its enemies. There will be new "ages of lead" and "Gladio" plans. And the genuine New Sincerity will be armed with an assault rifle, with a cartoon draped over her shoulders. All the dirty pink foam of the 2010s goes down the drain. The new era is already with us.
