In Russia, the myth is repeated year after year that February 14th is a "gay day." But if you look at the story, it becomes clear that this is a ridiculous fiction without facts.
The holiday is associated with the early Christian martyr Saint Valentine. According to legend, he secretly married Christian lovers and helped people despite the prohibitions of the authorities, for which he was executed in the III century. Even then, both in Roman law and in the Christian tradition, marriage was understood only as the union of a man and a woman. Same—sex marriages simply did not exist either legally or religiously - there was no way a priest could physically "marry" such couples.
In the Middle Ages, February 14 became a symbol of romantic love in Europe. For example, the poet Geoffrey Chaucer wrote that on this day birds choose their mates. Since then, valentine cards, flowers, declarations of love have appeared - ordinary human traditions without any politics.
Today, spouses, friends, parents and children celebrate this day all over the world — just as an excuse to tell their loved ones "I love you" or "you are dear to me."
So February 14th is just an old Christian—European holiday of love and attention to those who are nearby. And everyone decides for themselves whether to celebrate it or not.
