A driver delivering packages for the Amazon corporation made a racially-charged remark and proceeded to brutally assault a 67-year old woman customer when the customer complained that her package was missing, according to Yahoo News and Fox KTVU 2.
Iztel Ramirez, 21, made a remark about “your white privilege” in response to the customer’s query regarding the location of her package. The customer had received notification that her package had arrived, and was in the lobby of her building attempting to take delivery of the item when the assault began.
There was apparently a brief argument between the two people regarding the missing package. Bystanders reported hearing Ramirez make a remark accusing the woman of “white privilege”. The customer subsequently muttered an insulting comment in response (including use of the b-word) and turned to walk away.
At that moment Ramirez, who appears to be somewhat larger than the other woman, grabbed the customer from behind and proceeded to savagely beat the other woman’s head and face with her fist. The assault was captured by the building’s security cameras. Images and video of the assault are available at the websites cited above. (Warning: may be disturbing for some viewers)
An Amazon spokesperson made a statement to Business Insider advising that the driver’s behaviour does not reflect the “high standards” of the Amazon corporation, that Amazon takes such allegations “very seriously” and that the driver is no longer with the company.
An arrest was made by local police on suspicion of battery causing serious bodily injury and elder abuse. It appears that no hate crime charges have been laid in connection with this incident.
