The book is called The Mystical Science of Creativity, and yes, those two words are supposed to clash. That's the whole point — the title is the argument, compressed.
Creativity has been badly misunderstood for a very long time, and it usually gets misunderstood in one of two directions. The first is pure mysticism: ideas as gifts beamed in from somewhere else, on their own schedule, to a lucky few. That's the ancient version — it's literally where "muses" come from — and plenty of smart people still talk about creativity as ethereal and out of their hands.
The second error is the overcorrection: treat it like pure mechanics. A formula. Ten steps to a guaranteed idea. But anybody who's actually built things knows that breaks down too. There's always a moment where something shows up that you didn't strictly reason your way to, and no checklist really explains it.
The truth is that it's both at once — and that's the thesis. We now know, from psychology as much as from doing the work, that creativity is something everyone has and can develop. That's the science half, and it's the empowering part. But we still can't fully explain the mechanics. There's a real mystery in there that no method completely resolves. That's the mystical half, and it's the honest part.
I didn't want to sell creativity as magic, and I didn't want to sell it as a machine. It's the stranger, more useful thing in between. Three words, one argument.
