MicroStrategy is taking its devotion to Bitcoin from the company's balance sheet straight to the feet of enthusiasts. An exclusive drop has appeared on the company's official store: a pair of custom Bitcoin-themed Nike Air Jordan 1s, on sale at a list price of $250.
This lifestyle marketing effort confirms how the brand led by Michael Saylor intends to transform the bullish narrative about BTC into a true mass culture. Yet, behind the hype surrounding the launch, a detail has raised more than a few eyebrows among crypto purists: it's not possible to pay with Bitcoin on the portal.
Why doesn't he accept Bitcoin?
The truth is a cynical calculation based on pure corporate accounting.
For a publicly traded US company, every single fraction of BTC collected and managed for the sale of physical goods must be tracked, accounted for, and subject to capital gains tax.
Furthermore, Saylor has been preaching for years that "Bitcoin is capital, not currency" and that spending satoshis to buy consumer goods is financial folly. In fact, his own store applies this rule to the letter: keep BTC for institutional HODL, pay us in FIAT.
