We often wait until January 1st to make the usual resolutions, but the best time to take real control of your finances is now. Taking some time for a financial "reset" before the year ends gives you a huge head start.
1. Calculate Your REAL Surplus
The first step isn't to start investing haphazardly or cut every expense, but to understand your cash flow precisely. Use your bank's app and find all your Income, Expenses, and Surplus.
Surplus is what you have left, your dormant liquidity. To calculate it, simply calculate: Income - (Expenses + Invested Money).
2. Hunt for "Ghost" Subscriptions
This is the quickest way to recover liquidity. You may have a subscription or recurring service that you haven't used in months or very often and could probably do without. And here I could also include obsolete and overpriced phone plans and utility bills (comparison sites can help you find better prices).
3. Build or Update Your Emergency Fund
An unexpected event like a car in the garage or an unexpected medical expense can destroy the best budget in a matter of hours. So set aside a liquid buffer equal to 3-12 months of fixed expenses. If you already have one, ask yourself if you've used up your funds and therefore need to replenish them, or if your fixed expenses have changed recently.
In this case, it's best to leave these funds in a yield-based account like Trade Republic/Scalable Capital or others, which provide income on untied money, withdrawable at any time and ready for emergencies.
4. Set Measurable Goals, Not Wishful Thinking
"I want to save more" or "I want to be better" are not goals, they are vague desires. Without a clear path, a plan will fall apart.
Translate intentions into numbers or deadlines. "I want to save €2,500 by December." In this case, you can set a portion of your salary to go into a savings account each month (you can do this on Revolut or other digital apps), perhaps with a paycheck.
5. Automate Everything
Most financial plans fail because we all have hectic lives; between commitments, appointments, and so on, we end up forgetting to move this money. As I mentioned, build automated systems.
Apply the golden rule of "pay yourself first." Set up transfers to your savings accounts exactly on the day your salary arrives.
Financial peace of mind is never the result of chance, but of planning and action.
