Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) have definitely exploded in popularity within the past year. These digital assets are selling for hundreds, thousands, and even millions of dollars. Whether it be digital art, music, pizza, a picture of dirt, these NFTs are selling like hotcakes. These digital assets that represent real-world assets are bought and sold online and are usually encoded with the same software as many other cryptos.
Some NFTs are jaw-dropping works of art. Some NFTs are just pictures of the owner's animals. The NFT marketplace has a vast majority of art to choose from and it's up to the consumer to determine how valuable that token is. You're able to bid for NFTs, comparable to an online auction, and the highest bidder snags the token for themselves. They now own the intellectual rights/property to what the NFT represents.
In this article, we are going to take a look at the top 5 most expensive NFT purchases to date! It's mind-boggling how much these NFTs were purchased at... but at the end of the day, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Sit back, relax, and come with me on this journey through the world of expensive NFT purchases!

#1 - Beeple - The First 5000 Days - $69,300,000
Beeple is a digital artist that began posting a piece of artwork everyday since 2007. This collection of 5,000 pieces of art is combined into one giant masterpiece, tracking the development of the artist over the course of his career. This NFT was sold on Christie's, the world's leading auction house. It was purchased by Vignesh "Metakovan" Sundaresan.
#2 - CryptoPunk #7804 - $7,500,000
CryptoPunks are a randomly generated set of 10,000 unique digital characters and are some of the first ever minted NFTs on the Ethereum blockchain. They were developed from American game studio Larva Labs by Matt Hall and John Watkinson. These pieces of pixelated art are massively popular in the NFT market, and some were even given away for free when they initially launched. If this pipe-smoking alien didn't catch your eye before, the price tag definitely will!
#3 - Beeple - CROSSROAD - $6,660,000
Beeple tops the list again with his CROSSROAD NFT. This piece of art features an enlarged visual of former US President Donald Trump defeated with profanities written all over his body. The artwork was originally designed to change based on the outcome of the 2020 US Presidential election. Beeple mentioned that if Trump won, the art would’ve depicted him wearing a crown and striding through flames. Since he lost the election, we have this form of the art! This NFT is actually a video project, not just the picture above, and the video can be found here.
#4 – Jack Dorsey – First Tweet - $2,900,000
Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter, minted his first ever tweet on the platform into an NFT and people began bidding almost immediately. The token was minted using a platform called Valuables, an NFT platform that allows users to mint and sell their tweets. Dorsey immediately converted 100% of the proceeds to Bitcoin and donated it to a charity named Africa Response. Awesome move, Dorsey!
#5 – CryptoPunks #6965 - $1,540,000
CryptoPunks secures a spot yet again with this fedora-wearing ape. While the ape is unamused, the consumer is not, as the ape is 1 of only 24 Punks, the second rarest CryptoPunks collectible after the alien. This means only 24 versions of the ape will ever be created, making the collection more valuable as time goes on and all collectibles are purchased.
Well, there you have it! A stunning list of the top 5 most expensive NFTs purchased to date. NFTs are still soaring in popularity, so it’s only a matter of time before this list becomes outdated and there are newer, more valuable NFTs minted and sold in the crypto marketplace. You can see from this list alone that basically anything can be sold as a NFT… there’s a market for everyone! If you want to check out some NFTs for yourself, my favorite platforms are OpenSea and AirNFTs. Go take a look at what’s currently in the market! Who knows, you might even buy a NFT for your own collection!
