First Bar to Accept Bitcoin Payments Shuts Down

The first bar to accept Bitcoin as a means of payment has shut down, according to a Reddit post from the owner posted on October 19.

  • Jörg Platzer, the bar’s owner, thanked users for their support in the post, saying that bar would be closing for good 
  • Room 77 was a bar in Kreuzberg, Berlin, and had gained a special status within the cryptocommunity
  • The bar is informally considered to be the first retail outlet to accept Bitcoin as a means of payment
  • Room 77 hosted the longest running Bitcoin meetup and was the first place in Europe to have a Bitcoin ATM
  • Many members of the cryptocommunity paid homage to Room 77 for its efforts to spread the word about Bitcoin, including Monero Lead Maintainer Riccardo Spagni
