Digital Payments will rebalance global economic power, the importance of the transition to digital payments as cash is a source of contagion.
That this Coronavirus will bring epochal changes I think is now established. Not only from a health point of view, where all by means of special apps, we will be traced in our movements, but also from a point of view of technological innovation.
Covid 19 has accelerated the change process, or perhaps the virus simply didn't come by chance (let's be clear, I'm not talking about conspiracy theses)
Banks are starting to talk seriously about CBDC, as cash is a source of Coronavirus transmission. This is what is emerging on many fronts.
Some studies have found that the human flu virus, for example, can remain alive and contagious on banknotes for 17 days. Consequently, it would not be unreasonable to assume that paper currency also played an important role in the spread of COVID-19.
China
The Chinese authorities have destroyed banknotes potentially in contact with the coronavirus, while the Federal Reserve has quarantined banknotes from Asia.
In short, there are all the credentials to switch to digital money.
China is already working on its digital currency backed by its central bank. In the future, companies that do business in China will be forced to adopt a digital yuan, which will certainly erode the primacy of the dollar on the global financial market.
Korea
The central bank of South Korea announced on Monday, the launch of a pilot project to test a digital state currency. The program would have been launched already in March and will run for 22 months until December 2021. The 22-month program aims to identify the technical and legal provisions necessary to create and issue a digital state currency.
If till now adoption has been expected over a decade, the process will now be speeded up.
