Facts about Norway
Some random Norway facts had been popping up in my Insta feed and I figured I would learn more about that country. Come along for a fantastic ride.
It is officially known as the Kingdom of Norway
Which is serviced by a constitutional monarchy led by King Harald V and Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. It became a unified nation in the year 872 and gained full independence from the Swiss in 1905. They have their own Nordic model which presides outside the EU for such offerings as Healthcare and Social Security. From a land mass perspective they have one of the longest coastlines in the world with over 1,000 fjords.
Another geographic oddity to think about - Caledonian Mountains
Are an ancient fragmented mountain belt stretching from northwestern Europe to eastern North America. Look it up, you can see where these two mountain ranges fit together prior to being ripped apart by a constantly evolving earth.
Norway Ocean farms grow seaweed at scale.
They started growing seaweed in 2014 and produced 50 tons in 2015 and the last published value was 340 tones in 2022. One of the stated goals is to remove CO₂ from the atmosphere, aiming to verify carbon capture methodologies. The other goal is to remove excess nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, which helps reduce local ocean acidification.
Economy is driven by Oil and Gas
Fuels account for roughly 25% of its GDP.
Sovereign wealth fund
It is often referred to the Oil Fund, is the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund, with assets exceeding $2.2 trillion as of mid-2026. It was established in 1990 and it is managed by Norges Bank Investment Management (NBIM) on behalf of the Norwegian government. Don't worry its very ethical, it even has goals to achieve net-zero emissions for the fund's investments by 2050.
Reported as one of the happiest countries in the world!
Don't take my word for it read it here. Does the happiness stem from stable economy and the fact that the sun never sets in the summer? Or is it the have amazing northern light shows and very little light pollution? Anyone have other ideas about the happiness emanating from this land?
Summary
A small and economically mighty nation that boasts a Viking heritage and a modern oil and gas powered GDP with a very happy populace. A journey worthy of exploring in person if I can say so.
