UPDATE: Since the publishing of this posting a development has occurred which addresses what this article might have anticipated:
"...the realm of traditional creative art and artistry, and those traditionally source for the making are to be confronted with the challenge to sustain a visible and viable presence, especially as AI technologies advance exponentially and in short order.".
Motherboard (Tech Vice) by Matthew Gault [https://www.vice.com/en/article/bvmvqm/an-ai-generated-artwork-won-first-place-at-a-state-fair-fine-arts-competition-and-artists-are-pissed?utm_source=reddit.com&utm_source=reddit.com] titled: An AI-Generated Artwork Won First Place at a State Fair Fine Arts Competition, and Artists are Pissed. The AI-Generated Art in question is this: (screen grab)
Of course for those with their eye on AI development in this realm had much to say (quoted from original article):
"“We’re watching the death of artistry unfold before our eyes,” a Twitter user going by OmniMorpho said in a reply that gained over 2,000 likes. “If creative jobs aren’t safe from machines, then even high-skilled jobs are in danger of becoming obsolete. What will we have then?”"
The `Artist' producer of the piece holds to the concept of originality and artistry premised on the `prompt' that created the AI manifestation, plus the expertise in finalizing the process to achieve the presented rendering for the competition. And, was equally astonished of its winning `First Prize'.
No doubt the controversy over the position AI-Generated Art within the Art Community large will be loud, robust, and at times possibly, a little mean??
AI or Artificial Intelligence is fast becoming ubiquitous in our day to day lives. Advances often so remarkable it's becoming next to impossible to differentiate what is product of an AI algorithm to what is produced by some lowly, yet to be made extinct Human. The term `real’ is fast becoming questionable to its presence.
AI Art Generator in the name of DALL-E [mini and now 2] produced and distributed by OpenAI [https://openai.com/] "...a new AI system that can create artistic images and art from a description in natural language"; a tool fast assuming a role as source of creative artistry.
Intrigued by the potential of applying an AI Art Generator [DALL-E mini] made available on-line by Craiyon [https://www.craiyon.com/] to see what images could be generated utilizing samples from a collection of eclectic writing created over the years
What follows is a small sample put to the challenge. The images are unique and one-of-a-kind in every way given they are the product of an artificial intelligence's interpretation of specific arrangement of words transformed into graphic-image form. The results are both fascinating and at times startling.
[NOTE: Each application of a given string of word, AI Generator produces up to nine unique images; these are but two for each example to illustrate diversity of interpretation.]
Example 1: Decades of humanity's existence pass into millennia; unfortunately, its collective intelligence is superseded by its demonstrative stupidity:
or
Example 2: Can't I be who I am, or what you want me to be:
or
Example 3: If an individual is reliant on the philosophy of another to define themselves, they are off to a bad beginning, and potentially
a flawed ending:
or
As illustrated by these few examples the dexterity, and vastness of unique imagery derived from interpretation of the same string of text is astonishing but too, only the beginning of both complexity and resolution to be generated by the latest generation: DALL-E 2 in Beta-stage development accessible from OpenAI [https//openai.com].
Obviously the realm of traditional creative art and artistry, and those traditionally source for the making are to be confronted with the challenge to sustain a visible and viable presence, especially as AI technologies advance exponentially and in short order.
