Fascinating mushroom shapes - Scutellinia scutellata

Scutellinia scutellata - Mushroom from 5 to 20 mm in diameter, initially spherical, then cup-shaped or discoid, without a stem. The interior is bright red, crimson, brick-red, the outer side is brownish, covered with dark, bristly, short hair, at the edge it is denser and longer (up to 2 mm). The flesh is thin, crumbly, tasteless and odorless.

Occurrence: In forests and thickets, on decaying deciduous and coniferous trees, on plant debris, on moist soil. It grows in groups, often the fruiting bodies overlap, it is quite common. It appears in early spring to fall.

Value: It is not a poisonous mushroom but has no special nutritional value or flavor.
