Back then, when even the smallest bit of entertainment or joy was forbidden for us, this beautiful girl suddenly appeared from behind a window.

Evanescence - Bring Me To Life

It's said that Evanescence’s music was one of the first popular music of Western Alternative metal genres to sneak into the Iranian’ ears nearly two decades ago—smuggled in on simple CDs, through the most basic technology, and always in secret.

In those days, a woman singing was seen as a serious crime in Iran, and simply owning those CDs felt like forbidden act altogether. Boys like my brother hid them in their socks drawer the way others might hide porn.

I remember slipping quietly into my brother's room to look at one of those CDs. To be honest, I was just snooping, and never thought I found something like that.

Needless to say, I was mesmerized and there was one that I immediately loved. My ears weren't used to metal music back then—it was the first time I'd ever heard anything like it—but this song pulled me in right away.

My English wasn't strong enough yet to fully understand the lyrics, but thankfully, music is a universal language. Not to mention, her delicate silk pajamas, and over the top acting, her gorgeous body and makeup vs their instruments, their hysterical screams and metal outfits was so captivating and confusing  at the same time.

It might sound silly now, but I recall thinking to myself: “Hey! Stop singing in the background for one second and go help that young man saves her!"

Silly me!

I desperately wished he wouldn't let go of her hand. My eyes welled up when their hands finally slipped apart—and I didn't care that it was all symbolic.

Silly me!

Today me defiantly wouldn’t though, saying “Thanks God! LIFE … GOOD RIDDANCE."
