This episode is what Top Gear is all about. Fast cars, challenges and reaching the top gear.
Chris Harris went for the new Porsche 911 992 Carrera S (Yes it is weird and confusing), and his option was deemed predictable by Flintoff. Who ironically chose the Aston Martin V8 Vantage because it's British yet under the bonnet is a Mercedes engine. And of course, it wouldn't be top gear if someone didn't come up with the wrong category of car. McGuiness showed up with a Ferrari Portofino which is a GT car, it's on a higher level than the sports cars.
I thought as usual that the first challenge would be a drag race but it wasn't which is great. They met at an airfield which has one of the longest runways. The target was to be as close as they can to their top speed. Given that Paddy had the most powerful car he won the challenge, the first challenge was fun. Then out of nowhere, Freddie was on a rocket, Chris in a Nissan GTR and Paddy in a shed. Oh yeah, a top gear surely must have a drag race (doesn't matter of what sorts). Chris won this drag race by miles, while Freddie was unable to stop his rocket and ended up on the grass and gave everybody a scare. Until now it was a nice, cool episode.
After that, Harris started testing the Volkswagen unlimited race car, the "IDR", it runs on batteries so it's electric, and what do electric cars give you: mind-blowing acceleration. From 0-60 in 2 seconds, I am sure my face would have gone backwards if I tried it. Not only does this car accelerates demonly, but it also has staggering cornering speed, you can experience almost 5Gs while making a turn, this car is absolute bonkers. It smashed records everywhere, at Goodwood it beat an F1 car, pike peaks hill climb did it faster than 12 seconds and it also has the record at Nurburgring for a fastest electric car. It is a brilliant car but all this power does come with a disadvantage, on a full charge this car can only do 12 miles which is massively short.
Later on, they welcomed KSI to the studio, this part I think was mostly to target audience my age, because KSI won't make any sense for the likes of my father who is in his 50's. And for those of you who don't know him, he is a youtube sensation, singer and a boxer. When they met him before the studio, they shot footballs with the pressure from old car's steering wheels on Paddy. Then the interview was basic yet funny. His lap wasn't really good because it was very wet.
To determine what's the best sports car, the producers sent them a challenge stating that they have to make the most laps before noon on Caldwell racing track but they were around 100 miles away and they had to do it the old way (no SAT NAVs). Chris was given F1 champion Damon Hill as co-driver, the Stig to assist Freddie and Sabine from top gear Germany to help Paddy. Chris and Damon knew the road straight away. Flintoff begged the Stig for help and after many tries, the Stig helped him. With Paddy and Sabine, it was total chaos, they went round in circles before they knew the right way. Chris was the first to arrive at the circuit and then handed the Porsche to Damon who went flying. Joined later by the Stig in the Aston. Then with only 10 minutes remaining Paddy finally showed up. The Porsche did the most laps, the Aston came in second and in final place the Ferrari.
In the end, they all agreed that the Porsche was the best choice as a sports car.
This episode was really better than the two previous ones, despite not much action but it was funnier.
