Don't Do Scientism

Don't Do Scientism

Scientism is the view that science or the methods of the natural sciences represent the only or best reliable source of knowledge about all of reality. There are several problems with this view.

The most blatant issue is that it is a self-refuting. The core claim that only science gives us genuine knowledge is itself not a scientific statement but a philosophical thesis about the nature of knowledge. No experiment or dataset can prove it. By scientism’s own standard, we have no good reason to believe in scientism.

Also, science itself rests on non-scientific foundations. It cannot function without several assumptions it cannot prove on its own, such as the uniformity of nature, the reliability of logic, induction, and mathematics, and the basic trustworthiness of our senses and memory. These are philosophical presuppositions. Trying to prove them with science would be circular, as you would already be assuming what you are trying to establish.

Science is a great tool that humanity has achieved a lot through, but science alone is not sufficient to attain knowledge. And scientism is ridiculous and stupid.
