Physicalism, also known as materialism, holds that reality is fundamentally physical. Do you think that's the case?

If so, human minds are the product of unguided evolutionary processes driven by natural selection. Under that assumption, our cognitive faculties (memory, reasoning, perception) are shaped solely to maximize survival and reproductive success, not to produce true beliefs about the world around us.

Unguided natural selection favors traits that enhance survival and reproduction, not necessarily beliefs that accurately reflect reality. For example, the false belief that running from a predator is a game could promote survival as effectively as the true belief that predators are dangerous, if it leads to the same behavior, that is, fleeing from predators.

So if physicalism is true, then there's no reason why we should understand arguments for physicalism correctly.

Under theism however, it's reasonable to assume that if we are created, then the creator who made us would be capable and willing to give us the ability to reason correctly. So if God made us in His image, as the Bible teaches, then it's expected that we would be able to understand arguments correctly - also arguments for physicalism!
