A custodian is a bank or financial institution that takes possession of and holds a fund or customer's assets, electronic or physical. This is usually a reputable entity that guarantees and even insures safekeeping of the securities. In addition to protecting customers’ securities, custodians also settle all trades (transfer securities/cash between buyers and sellers), and collect valuation data required to calculate a fund's net asset value (NAV).
