The bat logo fight

By Duvinca | The world, the life & me | 18 Sep 2021

Hi there! Today I have seen in some social media that it is Batman's Day, yes the superhero also has his own day...

The best-known symbol is that of the bat, and for this Warner, owner of DC Comics, sued the Valencia CF football club for use this logo, and although they reached a temporary agreement with the design, they sued the team again when it was modified for the club's centenary in 2019.

The Spanish club by seniority had already used the bat since 1921, while Batman was born in 1939. And furthermore, this symbol also appears on the shield of the Spanish region, of the Community of Valencia since the 13th century, why?

Because it is said that... when Jaime I the Conqueror in 1238 went to liberate the city from the Muslims, he stayed on the hill of El Puig, which is nearby, from there he could see the city and meditate when to enter and attack... then a bat came flying and settled on the banner (which at that time was the flag of the Crown of Aragon) and the king interpreted it as a signal to then go on to win the battle, which he succeeded.

It even seems that a manager went so far as to say that the bat was already used on the shirts when in the United States they still hunted bison...

Finally the legal issue has ended with an agreement: Valencia CF may use the bat as a logo as long as they do not use it on fictional characters so there is no confusion with Batman. This perhaps, as it has been said in some article, can limit marketing or merchandising in comics or video games where fictional characters appear.

But wait! There are also more bat logos... also in the alcoholic beverages sector, a famous rum brand called Bacardí. Well it seems that logo is even older: The bat appeared on the emblem in 1862. The symbol was chosen after the acquisition of the distillery by the Bacardi family. There were many creatures living under his roof and the family considered it a good sign.

But it seems that as this sector is not related in any way, so there is no chance of confusion or maybe the American company didn't realize still...

What do you think? Who would be right? Is the deal good?

Here a couple of photos of the logo in the stadium of Mestalla, in Valencia.
